https://old.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/10ndm49/my_dads_rod_of_discipline_he_used_on_me_when_i/

tl;dr is basically a user found and posted the rod/cane/staff their dad used to beat them with, called the "Rod of Discipline", and others began recounting the equivalent their parents used on them, including one person who even said their dad made them make their beating tool with him.

I remember the old Axiom 'spare the rod; spoil the child'. I was never physically disciplined, so I took that to mean don't beat your kids - give them love instead. Oh, I was naive.

Same I got the switch. If I was really bad my parents would make me go out in the yard to find one. The would tell me if they didn't like it, they'd find one themselves.

It's wild that it used to be socially acceptable to beat on our kids.

I got beat with everything. Belt, hands, boots, my dad made me kneel on uncooked rice and hold two cans in the air.

The whole concept of putting something together specifically to beat the shit out of your kid(s) with is beyond comprehension imo.

I mean is it not? I can't imagine many of the "I turned out fine" crowd would explicitly argue against it if that's their own analysis of the situation.

After reading that topic, it's a wonder that there isn't a mountain of news stories about people who beat their parents.

It was the paddle or cooking spoon for me. My mom stopped spanking me when I was old enough to grab a spoon too and threatened to defend myself, lol.

That being said, I'm glad society is moving past spanking. I'd never do it to my kids.

I used to get spanked. Then one day, my 10th birthday, my mom decided to give me a "birthday spanking", which, honestly, isn't what you think it is. It was merely her hugging me and gently patting my bottom, counting to 10 to signify my age. It was meant to be an innocent, playful thing, but I screamed at the top of my lungs and cried "Why are you spanking me? I didn't do anything!". She stopped and gave me a blank look with a hint of horror, then quietly told me to go get my school clothes on. She didn't say a word to me for the rest of the day after school ended.

She and my dad never spanked me again after that.

IMO, physically punishing your kid with spankings or beatings of any kind can give them the idea that a loved one hitting another loved one is acceptable and the right thing to do, thus leading to an abusive relationship where the one being abused thinks it's normal and they're the one at fault, not the abuser, or turn them into an abuser themselves. I don't see a difference between a parent doing it to punish a child and an abusive spouse doing it to their spouse; either way, someone is getting punished for talking back or disobeying, then being told later on by the abuser that they're sorry and they love them.

My mom spanked me. And now she wonders why we arent close. Its actually one of many things that added up to me not wanting to spend more time than necessary with her.

When my kids were younger one of the moms (a policewoman, go figure) admitted that she spanked her son and was bewildered at the looks of horror on the rest of our faces. She asked how we disciplined our kids. For most of us it was taking away privileges. But really my kids dont act up, just raised them in loving environment and always explain things to them (theres no just because I said no in our house, we always explain).

I think I was beaten with just about anything you could beat a kid with. Most commonly a branch from the backyard I had to get myself.

My parents were really talented at beating kids. They could do it just right so no one at school would notice. They loved to do it public too. Especially at church, where a crowd would gather and hoot and holler and scream in "tongues" while I was sobbing and begging them to stop. Good ol' Christian love.
