There are a few topics on here moaning about ads. Well I raised a feedback ticket and the admin said literally not one ad had been flagged as malicious so they cant do anything about it.

If you just wanna moan great. If you wanna try and help stop the issue report them using the relevant button!

I don't use adblock on GameFAQs because for the most part the ads are non intrusive and if it helps support a site that's helped me countless upon countless times in video games and has granted me a platform to meet some really, really awesome people, I just don't care having to see some jpegs and gifs of anime and video games.

Well why the fuck don't you use a browser with an ad blocker you can get them on mobile you know.

Try Brave for mobile: https://brave.com/

Or Firefox for mobile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-your-phone-or-tablet

Just get off Chrome or whatever rubbish you are using.

It's a tall ask to ask them to live test for the functionality of every ad that taboola or whatever the fuck provides. If the ad provider approves an ad that breaks the functionality of the website, they can't know until someone reports it.

In this case, it sounds like it isn't even identifiable.

But even so, you're browsing GameFAQs without an Adblocker. Might as well go raw dog some strange. It's as safe

The advertising death-spiral will continue, until sites cut out the magic-money-button middlemen.
What's the next big game coming out, Hogwarts? There should ads all over the sides of the page on desktop, and a big square one or two on mobile, burned right into the HTML/CSS. No scripts, no trackers, just a <a href="[whatever url]?ref=gamefaqs">, along with a nice check written out to Allen for running it for a month.

Adblockers aren't set up to block that, unless you're dumb enough to wrap it in <div class="ad"> or something.

What ads?

After picking up a few viruses here and there that I found came from website ads upon investigation, I don't allow them to run anymore, anywhere.

If websites and advertisement companies can't be bothered to protect their users, clearly we just have to do it ourselves. Them having to rely on said users to be their beta testers / guinea pigs is nothing but a goddamn joke.

And yet, I never see a single ad on this website.
Because, no site actually sells ads, apart from maybe local newspaper sites twenty years ago. Sites just copy/paste a mystery <script> tag and expect it to be a magic money button.

Then some rogue ad gets through somewhere, and fed-up end-users pop on an adblocker that hoses every site. Then, seeing revenues are down, desperate sites pack on even more mystery scripts and even more rogue ads slip in, which drives more users to adblockers. Repeat until every website is bankrupt or heavily paywalled.

Also, it's not my job. And allowing ads is a security risk so the correct behaviour is to block them outright.

Yeah and that is why I have TWO Ad Blockers running on Firefox and because I have 2 Ad Blockers on Firefox I never see any Ads on this site.

Only having one Ad blocker is just crazy IMO.

Here is proof that having 2 Ad Blockers work:

uBlock Origin with 22 blocked and Ad Blocker with 5 blocked.

For the record, I wasn't even talking about this site specifically. The viruses I've gotten in the past were from other sites.

The point stands that because some sites aren't willing to take basic steps to protect their users, I need to do so myself. And before you say "well this place is trustworthy; why don't you whitelist this site?", the exact same thing was once said about each of the sites I picked up viruses from. You realise they used to ads on this site properly? Never used to be google adsense malware trash. Used to actually be relevant, like ads for upcoming games and all that. Then they got lazy and just put in google adsense instead, which comes with the usual malware and slowness and shit.
Again, I'm not about to unblock ads when they are a vector for malware, slow down the site, are a waste of space, and I don't want to look at them. If they can't be bothered to screen them, thats their problem and not the users. They put in adsense just so they could be lazy and push the workload onto us. Nope, not gonna accept that.

As already mentioned the ads are done by a third party. I dont think the admins here have much control over that side apart from being able to give feedback themselves. At least back in the CNET days.
