Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The White House has unveiled a "Renters Bill of Rights" to push lawmakers and the private sector to strengthen tenant protections and make rent more affordable.
While the "Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights" released Wednesday is not a set of laws, it does offer tenants and landlords a set of recommendations "intended to support the development of policies and practices that promote fairness for Americans living in rental housing." And it comes at a time when rents are rising dramatically nationwide.
The document, which was published by the White House Domestic Policy Council and the National Economic Council, argues that housing should be safe, decent and affordable. It argues that rental leases should be fair with defined terms and responsibilities. And it advises renters to know their rights in order to protect themselves from unlawful discrimination or eviction.

Cant wait for Rs to call this woke and vote it down.

Read through it again and this is actually kind of useless. Educating people on when theyre being taken advantage of? Woo. Not gonna stop landlords from abusing their tenants who have no other alternative because of competitive pricing

California and I assume other states already has a landlord and tenant handbook which references civil code

"do better" would have been not demolishing all the public housing projects twenty or thirty years ago.

Someone I don't think handing out a 'Please Don't Be Greedy' pamphlet to landlords will be as effective as they think it will.

I'm not sure there's much he could do unless he can pass something through congress. Given the republicans control the house, its most likely a dead end.

Anything that's not a gigantic public housing initiative is going to tied up in the courts forever. Even that likely will as well.

Everyone should get free basic housing.

Everything in it is totally fair and reasonable.

There's no doubt that this is done with good intentions and that it would be effective if implemented. The problem is that the landlords have no accountability and don't feel that they need to follow any of this. They accurately believe that they hold almost complete power over their tenants and that they have an entire political party and half of another devoted to protecting their privileges and profits. Until you permanently reduce the power of landlords and their ability to use shelter as an investment vehicle, none of this will matter.

The overall idea seems to be making private leases more like HUD. Without a radical expansion of Section 8, I don't see how this is viable.
How in the hell is this USDA's jurisdiction?

This. We MUST reclassify housing as a human right. By that, we need privacy, too. I dont want to live in a bunkhouse with a bunch of strangers. We each deserve our own basic house or apartment. Same thing with healthcare. Housing should not cost 90% of your paycheck and a trip to the hospital should not cost a cent.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to problems that will arise.

Shouldn't they be focusing on stopping companies from buying up all available housing rather than worry about some silly thing that's not even enforceable?

Surely, the landlords just didn't know how their actions effected other people. Now that they're informed everything will be great. Thanks, Biden!

While a good idea in theory, how would something like that be implemented?

Like, who decides how many apartment buildings are "too many" apartment building for one company to own? Does it vary by location?

I am all for affordable housing for everyone, but it's a lot harder than just "lower your prices and don't own as much as you do!".

Resurrect the concept of housing projects. Maybe put a police station and modest bodega in the ground floor this time.

You cannot expect the private sector to cover the bottom of the bell curve, especially via unfunded mandates.

This could probably work if people were willing to be housed almost anywhere rather then where they and.......most others would probably want to live.

But most of them would likely rather stay or risk homelessness then be forced to live in a lesser city or state. So it probably wouldn't work.

Republican voters are like the guy that got stabbed, and then refuses to testify against the assailant, while insisting the police arrest the EMTs for infringing on his right to bleed out.

Without actual laws this means nothing.

Say, has anyone here (or someone you know) applied for a place and realized after the fact that the place isn't actually letting in any new tenants but instead is just collecting application fees and maybe sometimes having to do a tour of their one open unit?

I didn't mean by force. More so that you request a location and the goverment will attempt to house you in or as near your desired location as possible if they have units available.

Of course the more desirable locations will fill up fast, and like section 8 tenets will probably just live there forever.

why if it does legit nothing? need to actually make laws for it. like make it so rent is affordable on minimum wage like it used to be. rent has doubled from pre covid here.

There really needs to be rent control

Rent control does more harm than it helps. The only real beneficiaries are the lucky bastards who can get a unit, and never leave.

Tackling rent is cool and all, but some of those landlords are also paying $300-800k for those homes to rent out and that alone is a huge problem. Make it easier for Americans to buy a home too.

Biden is spitting in the face of renters. He's just doing it in a way that gives him plausible deniability. I mean, come on. Guidelines? Biden's a multimillionaire. He probably sees renters as "rentoids".

The last thing tenants need in my state is more rights. It is already too expensive and takes too long to get bad tenants out which leads to less people wanting to do long term rentals.

My sisters lease is up. Despite being a model tenant that has lived there for 8 years, the management will only give her 1 year leases from now on. Luckily doesnt have to put up with that.
