Man, they really messed it up with X5 and X6. Almost every stage is a gimmicky long drawn out stage and so many mid bosses. They kinda destroyed the pacing and the charm that was in X1-X4.

This is literally the only specific thing I can remember about X5 other than the Guns and Roses Mavericks. Generally, I remember the game being pathetically easy and boring the whole way through and the only parts that werent being more annoying and frustrating than difficult.

I never played X6 but X7 was a much worse shitshow than X5. They really dropped the ball on the whole series after X4. No wonder Capcom went back to Classic 3 times but never revisited X.

X8 was WAY better than 7, but still a shadow of what the IP used to be.

People shit on X7 deservedly, but man is X6 nearly down there as well in terms of quality.

The saving grace is the OST. Best in the series, far as Im concerned. The difference in quality level between the game itself and the music is the largest across the X series by far.

It really is a shame they stop you every 5 seconds to talk to you or throw an auto scroller at you, I really like how X4-6 Zero controls. X not so much but there's a cheat code that lets you start with the Ultimate Armor if you're dead set on wringing some fun out of him.

X6 is like one of those games you learn to laugh at and eventually that and the gameplay can make it fun. The translation, Gate in general, I HID MYSELF, alcoholic Sigma and so on.
Not Nightmare Mother though. That boss as Zero fucking sucks.

X6 is a great game

There's a stage in X6 where there's a squared mini boss that you have to kill over and over again. Fucking dumb as hell.

For being the originally planned ending to the X series, X5 is a mess.

Bad stage design
Alia talking non-stop
Boss power levels
Rescuing Reploids
A parts system
Two armors (both of which you can't use any of until completed, and one is essentially useless outside of collecting a couple of items)
Horrible check-points rendering extra lives pointless

X6 was unnecessary and cranked the above up to 11 with the exception of Alia who at least now was somewhat optional.

X7 was just all around bad.

X8 tried to bring life back to the series, but the damage was done. Each stage has a gimmick to it as well, along with other new unnecessary features.

Music is good at least.

Honestly I dont care much for X4. Lacks the intensity of the earlier games and just generally feels less punishing.

In the alternate paths? First time is Nightmare Zero, second is High Max. Beating him there unlocks the fortress stages early. Third time and beyond Dynamo will always be in that room.

Let alone it was needed to get to a capsule AND a reploid over a bottomless pit.

I'm someone that would rank X6 below X7 just because I think the Nightmare system is one of the most obnoxious things in the X series and because the gate levels are some of the worst levels in any X game.

X7 itself is an overall poor game and definitely my second least favorite, but I dunno, I thought a few or so levels were alright, X and Axl weren't that awkward to play as atleast and I do recall liking how they handled upgrade chips in X7 as well as how they handled X's armor more like the older X games and not like X5 or 6. The game still had some banger tracks too like any other X game (and to be fair so does X6).

But I also only played X7 via the MMX collection 2 on modern systems so I don't know if the collection version of it rectified anything compared to the original PS2 version.

I just bought all the Mega Man collections for XBOX (except for Zero), gonna play through OG games before starting the X series.

X5 has a level with a bike that just pisses me off to no end

X6 is a bad game but I still enjoy playing it. >->

I won't claim it's a good game, but it had some promising elements that fell short of being well implemented or well conveyed.

Rescuing reploids for parts was a good idea but some were in ridiculous locations, either by bottomless pits, spikes, or nightmares that almost immediately get to them.

Stage hazards and elements from the nightmare effect are a neat callback to X1, where defeating certain bosses caused some aspects of a stage to change (eg. freezing Flame Mammoth's stage), but how it worked was not well explained and certain hazards prevented you from going to alternate paths if you weren't properly equipped.

Zero's new moves and playstyle felt a lot stronger, but also slower than X5.

The armors were cool and decent in design and execution, but the falcon armor was still better since charging/using special weapons was OP.

Weapons were hit or miss, and mostly misses. Yammar Option was my favorite.

The 8 bosses were decent with some neat gimmicks. The Gate bosses were frustrating and tedious.

Plenty of secrets and alternate paths, lots of things to collect, but also a lot of stuff was easy to miss or required multiple revisits to a single stage.

Sigma looked cool but was also completely shoehorned in.

So yea, love-hate the game. I like to play through it occasionally, sometimes I go for 100% since I know where everything is at this point. Plus there are some BUSTED glitches with Zero that completely trivialize the game.

X7 has this really weird thing where you have to unlock X and he feels overpowered. It's such a slow game and you've spent all the prior game having to get in close as Zero or use Axl's pistol that suddenly being able to charge up and throw giant blasts at things feels monstrously overpowered.
Screw that orange/blue upside down seizure level though.

In X8 they give Zero this jumping spin move that annihilates everything so that's kinda fun.

Just finished watching someone playing X6. The guy is a super pro and it was still annoying to get through it. I will watch him finish X7 as well.

No shame in being a spectator these days.

X5 and X6 were bad execution.

I couldnt stand the series after X3

You should watch the last stretch of X Challenge in MMLC1/2.
The last fight has so much stuff flying around pretty much every video I've seen is just hiding in a top corner of the screen.
It's got Iris/Double as the same time in 1, Gate/Dynamo at the same time in 2 and both have Ultimate X and Maverick Zero simultaneously as the final challenge.

God x5 had some true bullshit and then x6 comes and says you haven't seen anything

X7 was just depressing.

There's a PC-exclusive (I think) glitch where you can make him move upwards (and diagonally upwards).

It's stupid busted.

I love that after 8 games of killing Sigma, the one where you definitively beat him also has him give you a weapon like any other maverick you beat. Unless you wanna count playing as Bass, they didn't do that for Dr Wily as far as I know.

That glitch might be exclusive to something. It wasn't working for me last time I played. Not that you really need it when you have the Halberd/Sigma Blade + Rasetsusen

x5 was mostly good ideas but poorly executed while x6 and x7 were just bad ideas also poorly executed.
I like X5 because it tried to shake up the formula a bit, kinda like X3, but really they didn't know what they were doing. Also X5 and 6 were probably rushed out super fast and could've taken twice the time in the cooker to be made into something decent.

X7 was unsalvageable

I honestly didn't mind the whole 3D thing for X7 but I just saw they had a stage that played like a shitty F-Zero game. Now that was dumb as fuck.

I thought they did MMZero series wrong compared to X5-X7, MMZ is a diamond.

X5 is for sure where the series started free-falling. I don't know what changed, but it was something big in the design philosophy. X5 is at least mediocre, but X6 is just bad.

I kinda like X7, but it's very much not in line with the other games and stands as its own creation--if you treat it as a 2D/3D platformer hybrid with modest ambitions, I think it ends up being pretty fun.

X8 was bland and unremarkable, but at least it wasn't offensively bad like X6.

The flying glitch was exclusive to ps2 version unfortunately, as was the max metal glitch. Bit of a shame, I would've actually hated X8 if I played a version where you have to grind for metals.

I want them to do this in the SNES style, like with MM9 and MM10. The MMX SNES games are my favorite classic games of all time. X, X2, and X3 are all outstanding.

While we're on the subject, 20XX is a pretty fun little Mega Man X-styled rogue-lite. Its sequel, 30XX, looks very good, too. I haven't played it (because I wanna play it when it's complete) but I bought the early access version like a year ago.

I have about 200 hours between 20XX and 30XX. Great games. Lots of replayability.
