Some do

LTTP had a secret room for a contest winner that wasn't discovered until over a dozen years later

Arkham Asylum had a secret hinting at the plot of Arkham City, and the dev had to leak it because City was about to come out and nobody had found it

The fact that people can access game files and codes makes this much harder for game developers.

This, its easier if people dont care about your game but if they do I dont really see how secrets like this are possible anymore without some kind of web based/real life ARG

The Chris Hooligan Room was discovered in the early 90s by mistake, and GWS Zoma was one of the first ones to be able to replicate it, still in the first half of the 90s.

Things like this have been done, but a big problem with trying to do it nowadays is that data-mining and boundary breaking are very common tools used to explore games outside their limits, so secrets and hidden details get caught super quick more often than not.

They don't have to be secret to take players years to find them. That one side quest in FFIX comes to mind as it wasn't hidden from the player at all + you were practically required to start it as a part of the story.

it's always hilarious to think how many of them were because features were ripped out, or games were cut down on scope during development, so things are just either partially in there or some kind of weird placeholder.

i mean, of course they intend to leave these things in for people to find like secret treasures.

I forget if it was the original Rogue Squadron or the sequel but it came out a year or two before Phantom Menace and they hid the Naboo star fighter in the game and nobody found it before they leaked it in a magazine after the movie was out. That was one of the games that still had a cheat code screen, but nobody found it because you had to enter two different codes and both would give you the sound that youd entered a wrong code. Then it turned out to be the best ship in the game.

It's harder now with the internet, data mining and communities dedicated to games as well as youtube videos showcasing things even the devs didn't realize

But some old console games still have secrets.

There was a whole FFIX sidequest (a shitty one) that there is no record of anying discovering until after 13 years.

Doom 2 had a secret for over 20 years.

Hell the Shadow of the Colosus remake added a secret that didn't exist in the original purely because the fanbase had rumors about it and looked for it

I'm not sure that's true. I know I was definitely using the Naboo Starfighter in the first Rouge Squadron. I don't recall putting in two codes at any point for it and if I did put in two, I didn't have to wait years to find out how to do that.

Thought that was before it came out as a scam? He also had the unfortunate luck of doing a video with Justin Roiland a few weeks before the news broke about him.

Regarding data mining, that only really lets people find things like models, map data, and menu options easily. It's not like you can easily analyze the raw code. Hence things like Nier Automata's "final secret" taking a long time to find.
