To me, Scooby Doo is like animated comfort food. It's always been there. It's okay. I kinda like it. I take it for granted. I'm not a huge fan of it. I could easily see others liking it more than I do. But I'm having trouble seeing why people are this upset about HBO's Velma.

Does Scooby Doo really have this huge fan base of emotionally connected fans that go all in? Are they just more quiet about it than fans of Schreck, Frozen, and My Little Pony? Or are they grabbing pitchforks and torches because someone made a woke show where everyone gets a race change and/or orientation change? I understand getting annoyed at virtue signaling or a show making changes for the sake of making changes. But it seems like the vehement response is disproportionate to the emotional connection which I expected Scooby Doo to have with people.

When I get mad about Disney Star Wars, it's because Star Wars was my childhood. If I'd been able to see into the future, I'd have spent those years reading classical literature instead. I just can't see someone saying, "Scooby Doo was my childhood." I can't imagine a bad Scooby Doo adaptation being a proverbial arrow to the heart that Disney Star Wars is for me and thousands of others -- especially since it's guaranteed that there will be yet another independent Scooby Doo adaptation within the next two years or so.

The show is just bad even if you took away the Scooby Doo IP. The show being attached to the Scooby Doo IP is just getting it more attention than it otherwise would.

Scooby is constantly putting out content, couple of them are misses, and a few of them *really* miss.

Normally this would've been bitched about and forgotten by now, but the far-right/anti-woke grift machine have decided to turn some random shitty show into a cause, and now it's been elevated to meme status so we can't stop talking about it.

i think its more hate for Mindy Kaling than defacing the series itself. apparently people are sick of the self hating brown girl lusting after white man trope because she does it in all her shows.

The dislike for the series is only mildly about the lack of Scooby-Doo tropes and A LOT to do about it being poorly written. It isn't really funny, it actively attacks the viewers for perceived views they may have, and for all it tries to be about the long lasting legacy of the character Velma, it turns her from a nerdy character who helps her friends into basically a shit-heel who hates everyone and treats them like shit.

It is not good. It is REALLY not good.

Is there a white man for her to lust after in the show? Shaggy is Black and, from the previews, I got the impression that Fred was gay in this version.

Fred isnt gay. Hes just super immature and an idiot.

Velma initially has a crush on Fred, but she pretty very quickly drops it. After four episodes, she isnt really into any white guys.

They race changed the races of a few characters. That meant that right wing grifters were going to be on it no matter what. And that is why the writers had to knock this out of the park. To show these people up to say.. you are just complaining to complain. But nope, they legit made one of the worst animated TV shows I have ever seen. While on the backend canceling better shows and taking them off the platform.

It is racist, sexist , nasty, so people on the left are going to talk about .
They have brown people in it, so people on the right are going to complain about it.

It is a mix of a lot of stuff.

Scooby-Doo isn't in it. Shaggy is a simp. Velma constantly makes racist remarks. Fred has a small penis and the show won't let you forget it. It's poorly written and unfunny. It's not woke, it's bad. It's an adult cartoon loaded with meta "humor" that constantly shits on adults that like cartoons. But yeah go ahead and assume everyone is taking the Tucker Carlson take without actually looking past the surface of why it is so egregious.

Scooby-Doo was a Cartoon Network staple if you were born in the early 90's.

Original series
The series with celebrity guests
The Vincent Price series with Scrappy
A Pup named Scooby-Doo

These played constantly and then off their popularity they started making animated feature length movies starting with Zombie Island.

Also, Velma is just a horribly written show. Even worse than Wheel of Time or Rings of Power. And the latest example of show runners taking a beloved piece of media and shitting all over it, because no one would watch the crap they spew if it was a new IP.

to answer your question, yes, the scooby doo franchise does have a pretty strong fanbase and following

they've made several successful shows and movies over decades. people have definitely grown attached to it. the fact that it still survives as powerfully as it does today pretty much attests to that. how many other 60's cartoon franchises can you say that about?

its the female ghostbusters tactic: if your show or movie sucks, just cry racism/sexism and try to shame people into liking it.

truth is the Velma writers fucking loathe the people who used to watch the original scooby doo cartoons, and it shows, It is the same fuck you relationship the writers of thundercats roar! Had towards the viewers of the original 80s cartoon

It's usually not a good idea to make your lead character very unlikeable with little to no redeeming qualities. Which is what it seems to have done with Velma. And it doesn't help that they made Fred and Daphne into unlikable assholes as well. Shaggy (or I guess Norville) is like the only one of the main crew that is somewhat likeable.

And of course it doesn't help that the writing makes it seem like this was written by a group of middle schoolers.

The show could have been decent even without Scooby-Doo had they had a good writing team and they actually made you want to root for the main characters, but so far that doesn't seem to be the case.
