For the record the only ones I've played were 1 (which was yikes) and 8 (which I plowed right through)

If you liked 8, you'll like 9, both are included with ps plus extra

Edit: To elaborate, 9 has many of the same mechanics and features that 8 did. And while 8 admittedly fit that style a little better than 9 did, I still found 9 to be a very enjoyable game. I just played Ys 8 and 9 earlier this year. It was my first exposure to the series, and I loved both games.

Bump System Ys Games
4 Dawn > 1/2 > 4 Mask > 3

Jump and Attack Ys games
Origin > Oath > 6 >>>> 5

Party System Ys games
8 > 9 > 7 > Celceta

although to me they're all great except 5

2 is an improvement over the first game, and since it's the back half of the story arc and included in the collection you might as well play it. That particular remake of Ys 1 is pretty obnoxious since they jacked up the difficulty of a couple of the boss fights).

anyway, 2, 4: Mask of the Sun, and Dawn of Ys all use the same bump system 1 does. Dawn of Ys is generally considered the best bump game, 2 would probably be in second place.

7, Celceta (remake of 4), and 9 would be closer to 8.

6, Felghana (remake of 3), and Origin are kind of in between - you only control one character, and there's more emphasis on platforming and less trying to ape Legend of Heroes by with endless pointless droning.

3 and 5 are the black sheep - they tried to add in an attack button, but they didn't do a good job of it. 5's probably the worst game in the series.

From what I've played:

Origin > Oath in Felghana > Seven > II > I

I'd recommend using a walkthrough for I and II, they're too obscure on their own. The other three are fun, and I'm planning on going through the rest of the series.

8 is the best Ys game out there. In a tier of its own. Top 10 for me lifetime.

Well you've touched the peak. 8 is easily the best. Besides that i'd recommend 9 and Origin.

if you liked 8 then try IX, seven and Memories of Celceta. Seven's my personal fav Ys game.
I do really like Origin and Oath in Felghana but they're very different games.

Ys 8 disagrees with you.

Does this mean I'd actually have to finish Ys 1?

You don't have to finish any of the games if you don't want to.

From what I've played, 8/9/Origin are the good ones. Felghana and Celceta weren't so great, and 1/2 were pretty alright with 2 being the better of the two.

I interpreted that to mean that you had finished 1.

the bat boss and the last boss are horribly nightmarishly painful in that particular version of Ys 1 if you aren't playing on easy so I don't blame you for stopping.

Most of the series is episodic, 2's probably the biggest exception since it picks up exactly where the first game ends so it's pretty much like changing discs in one of those multi disc psx games.

The other games don't really refer to the events of 1+2 that much. Mask of the Sun and Dawn of Ys do, since they were trying to be the big epic conclusion of everything up to that point but the remake (Celceta) pretty much bends over backwards to try to avoid mentioning the other games (hell, the original setup for the plot of 4 isn't even mentioned at all outside of like one flashback scene). And Ys Origin is a prequel starring the ancestors of Ys 1 and 2 characters, which is set entirely in the Darm Tower from 1 and the bosses are all re-imagined versions of bosses from 1 and 2 so playing the first two games would probably enhance the experience even though it's not strictly necessary.
