I'm not clicking on a Vox video, but didn't Spielberg release West Side Story or something with no subtitles?

The bit about dynamic range is such bullshit. We don't need explosions to be ear-blastingly loud. It's okay to have less range between the two, we get the idea of the loudness of explosions without having our eardrums burst. Is it really worth it to have speech be so quiet just so you can contrast that with a massive explosion?

As long as there's an option to turn them off, sure.

I always use subtitles because sometimes the audio mixing is crap.

Evangelion is terrible with audiomixing. character speak so quietly and quickly it's hard to understand them.

I end up watching a lot of things with subtitles because Im either watching it in Vietnamese/Korean or Im watching it in English with my partner and she finds it easier to follow with English subtitles as its not her first language.

I really haven't had problems with earphones/buds. There are definitely issues in actual theaters and Nolan films.

Didn't watch the entire thing, but honestly it feels like...

US filmmakers want to mix for theaters, fuck everything else.

Shame they're trash in most places and it's no better at them, and even the best movies these days aren't worth anywhere fucking near the price of entry.

Edit: Also actors who can't fucking be bothered to project, I guess.

That's discrimination & prejudice against those of us who speak a foreign language.

But from what was said on this video, that sounds natural. Apparently it's natural to have conversations with your mouth full of peanut butter on the regular if I were to judge from most movies.

That doesn't sound natural to me.

That sounds like they're speaking with their mouth full instead of properly acting and speaking their lines clearly for the microphone to pick up.

This. I fucking hate watching a show where the volume is at a reasonable level and then all the sudden I just woke up my neighbor's cat because terrorists blew up the Chrysler building or whatever the hell is going on in.

Like I feel like I legit cant watch half the action shows on Netflix without having my finger hovering over the volume button <_<

Modern sound mixing can go fuck itself. Quit trying to force this level of dynamic range on us. We don't want it

yeah im not a fan of such a huge dynamic range. i prefer listening at quieter volumes. last time i went to the theater (to watch avatar 2) i thought some parts were too damn loud.

on some audiophile forums there are people that want the peaks to hit up to 115 db in the bass (based on some THX reference level thing) and i just think that is crazy. rather have the vocals be easier to hear than have loud effects.

I'd rather have it be well balanced so that no one aspect is too over powering.

I remember thinking I was going deaf when watching Inception in theaters. Not sure if the speakers were shit or the movie just had awful sound mixing but I could hardly understand any of the dialogue
