I've been catching clips of it on the YouTube shorts and it seems like a riff on star trek. Is it a decent show to binge?

It's more Star Trek than modern-day Star Trek series. If you like Star Trek TNG, you'll definitely like The Orville. And no, its style is not dumb random silliness like other stuff Seth MacFarlane is known for.

Nah Tala > Alara. Alara was just the token cute insecure girl. Also yeah Orville is great and homage to Star Trek. It even has its own version of the Q character show up in season 3

The Star Trek i grew up with was TNG and voyager. And a little deep space. Most clips I've seen have that voyager feel. I really hate family guy and its type of humor and I was wondering if this was similar.

It's McFarlane's interpretation of Star Trek.
As much as I want to like it being a general ST fan, for me it's always fell a bit short in dealing with some of more severe themes it tries to tackle.
Not a bad show but had to abandon it after 1.5 seasons. Many people seem to really like it though.

It's nothing like Family Guy. There are definitely jokes here and there but it's serious scifi. The episode that dealt with time travel was pretty fucked up tbh

Season 1 has more jokes, and they don't always land, but it gets more serious as it goes on. Still has lighthearted moments, but sometimes it felt like I was straight up watching Star Trek.

Its very much worth checking out.

The humor is a bit more juvenile and awkward at the start of the series, but it never gets to Family Guy level and essentially goes away 100% entirely by the time it gets to S3.

As a fan of TNG and Voyager you can see what you think. If its not for you after several episodes, no harm in dropping it, but many Trek fans really appreciate and enjoy it.

First season Seth had to pretty much make it a blatant star trek parody or else they wouldn't do it. After it got some traction they turned control over to him and he toned down the goofiness for season 2 and 3. Still has comedy but not as frequent as the first season.

yes, it's a good show. the first season relies a bit too much on 20th/21st century pop culture references for humor, which are all way out of place considering the show takes place hundreds of years into the future, but luckily they tone that down in the later seasons. although in that respect i like how they handled it in season 2 better, because they still did have a fair amount of humor, but most of it arose organically instead of feeling like Family Guy cutaway gag-level forced humor. in season 3 what they did is pretty much get rid of most of the humor entirely. i thought that was a bit of an overcorrection.

but besides all that with the humor aspect, the rest of the show is consistently good if not great. especially if you are a fan of the 90s Trek shows.

It's a great show. It changes over time. The early episodes lean more into the humor, possibly as a way to get it made. But it gets more serious over time as Seth really steers it where he wanted it.

I love the show. But I will say I feel like season 3 dropped the ball. It almost completely removed the humor, and there were some really bad episodes. Like the one where people turn into dumb monsters.
