from the other topic, I feel like I got into Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door too early, before I appreciated turn-based RPGs.

I gave it a few chapters, but it wasn't for me, at the time, but I feel like it's something I would have enjoyed later on, especially since South Park: Stick of Truth is one of my favorite RPGs.

also, Morrowind.

I had never played a WRPG before it, and there was just so much to do, I ended up feeling lost.

I first tried TTYD when I was like 5. I thought the game ended after you open the black box that gives you the paper airplane ability.

None. Every game I've played, how I initially felt about it is how I truly felt

When everyone was playing WoW I was addicted to RuneScape. So I played WotLK much later in life on a private server to try and have that experience. Fantastic game.

Grandia
I got it and played it while I was sick. The camera being zoomed in that close and the movement when you'd change angles made my nausea worse. I still relate the game to those awful feelings. People love that game and the thought of it just makes me want to vomit

By wrong time, do you mean burnout?

could be anything - burnout, not being familiar with a genre, not being familiar with controls, recently played too many similar games, etc.

I probably would have enjoyed Oblivion more if i hadnt played runescape

FF9 and Chrono Cross, I couldnt appreciate until I was older. 9 in particular, a lot of its themes resonated so much more powerfully with me as I got older.

Pocky & Rocky.
Were that a weekend rental on SNES, I'd have played the shit out of it and gotten good. On Switch, it's just "why am I doing this to myself?"

shenmue.

dunno wtf i was playing with its incredibly slow pacing and exploratory style of "touch everything" gameplay.

i definitely had to be there at time of its release.

A lot of games these days just feel so overwhelming and a chore to really get "into". I enjoyed the first Horizon but the sequel felt like getting thrust into a ton of pointless busywork.

GTA 5. I would have loved it in college but I didn't play it when the community was at its peak. Now I play as a full-fledged adult and it's not as fun as it would have been when I was younger.

Monster Hunter too. Definitely would have enjoyed something like this in high school but I didn't have good internet back then.

Final Fantasy X. My experience with RPGs basically amounted to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Game Boy Color, and the Dark Cloud demo on the disc that came with the PS2 (which is more of an action RPG with town-builder elements than a tried and true turn-based RPG). I tried to play Chrono Trigger a couple times, and I just didn't like it that much for how much it was hyped. Point is, I wasn't a big JRPG guy.

At school, I traded my copy of Tekken Advance for FFX over the span of a couple weeks, and after playing it for a couple hours I just couldn't get into the game because of how dated it was. I think I got up to Luca, and I just didn't give a fuck past that point - probably got to the Blitzball match and sucked ass.

Keep in mind, this is like 2006. I had played Tekken 5, Ratchet and Clank 3, all the Jak and Daxter games - I liked more kinetic, actiony games that made full use of the PS2's capabilities. The back of the FFX box touts real-time blinking animations, with the effect being incredibly basic and fake. Everything about that game is stiff and dated - it comes with the territory of being a launch game. Another thing that really dated it was the framerate; again, look at all those games I listed above. FFX with its blurry 30FPS and weird freeze-frame aftershadow transitions really didn't do it for me. I just outright didn't like it.

So I get my game back, dude set a bunch of high scores which was annoying but whatever. Then a couple years later, I begin to burn out on video games. Even games I adored previously left me feeling like this empty husk.

And then I remembered FFX. It was a slow-paced game that let you take it at your own pace. It was the perfect game to just sit back and brute-force your way through.

I fully stand by FFX being a stiff, dated mess. But it's also a really good game, and I really enjoyed it. I played FFX-2 and enjoyed that as well, took me years to get 100% story completion in that one. Played FF5 and I really liked that kne. I love Dragon Quest and Atelier, and I'm thinking about trying out Ultima. Nowadays I prefer a good, slow-paced JRPG that I can take at my own pace.

Final Fantasy X had to sit with me for years before I finally got it.

Lol what. 9 is one of the darkest games in the series. Plenty of death and destruction.

Might come back to this topic tomorrow to contribute, but it's 5 AM and I'd have to think on it.

OoT

I rented it as a kid and didn't know what equip meant. So I got really annoyed that Mido wouldn't let me through even though I very clearly had a sword and shield.

Vagrant Story. I was like 8 when I first played that game. Too hard and didn't really get the story. Got my little kid ass filtered HARD by that illusion forest part and gave up.
