For anyone unfamiliar with the term, the Masquerade is the idea that the supernatural exists but is hiding from mundane society. Breaking the Masquerade is when ordinary people find out that they've been living alongside magic users and vampires and all sorts without knowing about it.

I know lots of series where the Masquerade broke some time ago in the backstory and society has mostly adjusted (The Hollows, True Blood), and some where the Masquerade is clearly very strained but nominally intact (Dresden Files), but I'm looking for something where it definitively breaks early on, and the world reacting and adjusting is a major theme.

The only one I can think of is the Kitty Norville series, which is fun but not exactly great, and I'm hoping there's better out there.

That was my first reaction.

I was writing such a series, but I gave up when I couldn't seem to convince any agents to give me the time of day. Maybe it was bad; maybe it was the state of the industry. IDK.

Actually, technically this is true of Mercy Thompson. There was a reveal of one species (fae) prior to the start of the first novel, but book one is about, in part, the reveal of another (werewolves), while others remain closeted (notably vampires).
