Discount brokerages usually charge fees to close an account, not open onethey want few barrier to opening an acount. I don't remember any fees but I could be wrong. My old brokerage charged me when I left. Also, if you're used to something like Fidelity or Schwab where you have access to cheap proprietary index funds, Merrill Edge will take some getting used to.
