No. It was only "Gen X" as a play on "Brand X" - literally a reference to how generic the generation was. Essentially, they're so lacking in a unifying cultural identity that no one could come up with a better name.

Then lazy people called the next generation "Gen Y" at first (until they reclassified them as Millennials), so then lazier people decided the next generation after would be "Gen Z" (or Zoomers, to play off Gen Z and Baby Boomer), and so on.

The main problem is that generation-based terms (and timeframes) usually aren't all that scientific. It's less that sociologists all get together and come up with an official academic definition for them, as much as pop culture tends to come up with random ideas and then eventually one of them catches on more than the others. Which then sort of retroactively becomes the official interpretation.

We are best defined as "the generation who finds boomers ridiculous but who still knew what life was like without the internet". We love the internet, but hate more or less everything it's caused. We probably aren't on the chart because we're too annoyed to find humor in things.

^ Nah. Boomers are competitive. We're "whatever". Although in time it will become clear that there were the pre-internet and post-internet generations and nothing else matters much, so fair enough at that level.

I feel like Gen X and millenials are more similar than they think. They both care and complain too much, except Gen X does it under the guise that they REALLY don't care, despite their endless ennui and millenials care too much that they wrap around to REALLY not caring because they equate complaining to accomplishing anything.

Of course, I am taking the absolute worst assumptions and stereotypes here, I know that someone could never speak for an entire generation with accuracy or without bias. I get that many are not like that, but at the same time, many are indeed like that.

Gen X was the generation that went "Man, the world is really fucked, isn't it?" And then we basically stopped caring and stopped trying because we're too jaded and cynical and it would be a waste of time.

It's why the quintessential Gen X music trend was guys sitting around in flannel mumbling and whining about how everything sucks.

Most Gen X humor is just laughing at the hypocrisy of the Boomers, or at the utter joke of how much Millennials hate Boomers when the Millennials basically are the Boomers. Millennials today are pretty much the mirror image of what Boomers were in the 60s and early 70s. Just with better tech and cooler stuff.

Yes yes, 90s kid. YOU are the one who's going to save the world. YOU're the one who sees all the bullshit and lies and hypocrisy and all the mistakes everyone else made along the way, and YOU're the one who's going to fix it all. I believe you, honest.

Two sides of the same coin there, but more the latter. Gen X would like to care, but it is increasingly clear that we're on the decline ramp and there isn't much that can be done about it short of some cataclysms. So whatever. We sympathize with millennials beating their heads against the wall, but

It's a makeup thing. People usually don't realize how much of an effect it has (especially when you think of women today who supposedly "aren't wearing much makeup" when they go for the "natural" look), but it plays a huge role. If you compare what women looked like in films during the Golden Age of Hollywood versus what women with no makeup and unstyled hair looked like from the same era, it kind of becomes clear that it's more that the standards of beauty then were different from today. Most women from the past you find unattractive would be way more attractive to you if they were just styled and made up to fit modern standards.

(As a converse, imagine if people in the past could look forward and see modern e-girls. They wouldn't think they were beautiful, they'd probably think they were some sort of aliens.)

Of course, when you combine that with the whole "people in the past age faster" thing (smoking, lack of sunblock, and poor nutrition all play a role in prematurely aging skin), and the fact that people in the present have way more options for plastic surgery, that doesn't really help either.

(Plus, in that specific video, none of the women were really all that young. They're playing teenagers, but Stockard Channing is literally in her mid-30s, while Olivia Newton-John is 30 and the rest are mainly in their late 20s. They're also women from the late 1970s trying to duplicate the styles of the 1950s. So, it's kind of weird all around).
