so, a while back, the show runner put out a casting notice for a black kid who was deaf/hard of hearing and knew sign language, and people assumed it was for the role of Sam.

anyway, I looked up the kid they ended up casting, and he is indeed deaf -

this isn't a knock on people who are unable to hear, obviously, just how people feel about the potential changes to the story this can bring.

I think it can bring an interesting element to the story, where the best chance of survival is staying quiet, but you've got somebody who likely wouldn't be aware how loud they were being.

But I think it's a bad idea here if the show is going to closely follow the game. I mean, unless Joel knows sign language, that whole sequence could really change.

Lon Chaney was deaf, and only acted in silent films. Really makes you think.

Are you aware of how hostile some segments of the deaf community are when it comes to things like cochlear implants? If a deaf actor played a role and acted like they could hear, the outrage would make things like a black Ariel or the all female ghostbusters reaction look like positive praise for the changes.

Yes, a large one. A number of Deaf people see themselves as lingual minorities rather than people with disabilities.

As someone who has hung around the deaf community for nearly 5 years at uni, I can confirm this to a degree. Can't remember what course it was or what function it served to the overall course (might have been a tech related one), but there was a video that one of my professors played that was about cochlear implants, and the video was all across the map from someone who was like "hell yes this tech is revolutionary" to a dad whose son got a cochlear implant and reacted like a homophobic father whose son came out of the closet.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

truu.

I'm trying to remember which prominent roles had deaf/hard of hearing characters, and the ones that come up are the actress in Eternals and the actress who plays Echo(?)

also, yea - my program was working with an ASL interpreter, and she gave us a background on how BASL developed due to sign-language schools being segregated, or something like that.
