I havent played Shadowbringers yet. Subsequently not Endwalker either. Purchased both, though just am not familiar with new DRG rotation.

I've also played Final Fantasy XIV but haven't gotten very far....

I really want to get into FF14 but I cant stand subscription payment models on top of buying expansion(s), it's such a shitty system that died years ago for a reason, no idea why they continue to use it.

I mean, the reason it died years ago was because most MMO's and other live services found that they could make more money by stuffing the game with microtransactions, not because it was actually intolerably bad. I'm in the same boat of being somewhat interested, but not really feeling the idea of subscribing (having done it for WoW, it just creates a weird sense of obligation to play the game to get my money's worth and the need to make a conscious decision to stop playing the game when I'm done instead of being able to drift away naturally), but I do respect that they're charging everyone a reasonable fee to maintain (and profit from) the game instead of carrying it on the backs of whales. It means the average player ends up spending more, but as an alternative to exploiting the mentally ill for fun and profit, I'm okay with that. I just probably won't ever take the plunge because there are too many other games that have my interest and will cost less.

At least FFXIV doesn't try to keep you playing forever. When you run out of content to do, there's no reason not to unsub and wait a few more patches for a substantial amount of post-expansion content to be released.

Other MMOs like WoW tend to tie their progression to weekly activities and punish you for not being diligent and constantly subscribed; meanwhile in FFXIV gear difference is relatively minimal and the catchup mechanics are pretty generous.

Shadowbringers and Endwalker are absolutely insanely good experiences and nothing I've played in the past couple years comes close except for Xenoblade 3. I raided a bit, but it was only because I wanted to spend more time in those worlds, not out of obligation.
