I'm relieved. This is my first time dealing with a hard freeze in my house. I just turned the water back on for my sprinkler system and everything seems to work OK. There were a couple sprinklers that didn't go back down on their own, but when I tapped them lightly, they snapped back. I'll have to keep an eye on that, I guess.

Home ownership is a lot more work than living in an apartment, but it's worth it. I feel like I have a lot more control over things.

None of the pipes for it are above ground except for the rain sensor, so I figured I would just turn the water off for that outside. Should I be doing more than that?

  1. Where do you live?
  2. Why aren't you winterizing you sprinklers every year?

I always do mine the last weekend in October, and don't turn them back on until the last weekend of March.

San Antonio, TX

I looked up steps to weatherize sprinkers, but the only above-ground components I have are the rain sensor and the controller. What do I need to do for those, if anything?

You really should blow out your sprinkler lines, even if they are underground.

It mat not get to the temps down there where the water underground will freeze, like up here in NY, but you should still blow them out every fall, just to be safe. But just the general concept that water expands when it freezes, and most underground sprinkler pipes are plastic, is a recipe for disaster should one crack.

Is that a matter of running the sprinklers with the water turned off so that the pipes are fully drained?

Not quite, as you'll get no pressure. You'll need and air compressor to "push" the water out of the pipes.

This explains it easier than I could.

Ah, OK, thanks. I'll have to figure out how to do that with mine. I have an air compressor that I bought to fill my tires with air, but I didn't think to use it with something like this.

It's not nearly as complicated as it may seem, once you know what you're doing.

It's almost a joke to think there's landscaping companies that charge upwards of $200 to do it around my area.

I did not dodge the busted pipe bullet. Came home from work Fri. to begin packing for trip to moms only to find out I had no water. Got it fixed pretty quickly considering it was the Xmas weekend.
