Buffets are an alternative to traditional sit down dining, where rather than picking one or two dishes you can sample from a large variety of options, while remaining practical for kitchen and wait staff. It's an alternative method to exploring the same meal.

You should not be eating more than 1 or 2 plates at a buffet. You certainly shouldn't be stacking buffet plates with multiples of the same item (with the intention of eating multiple meals worth of a single item). You definitely shouldn't be filling an entire plate with samples from the dessert table.

In my travels, most countries and tourists understand this, but Americans seem to lack self control and cause undue stress to buffet staff. What is the reason behind this?

To save money If I can get my fill at a buffet for a cheap price, why wouldnt I? Its makes sense. Why should I pay, and not eat food if Im still hungry? The whole point of eating is so you arent hungry anymore, right?

I tend to get small amounts of a few items at a time, then make multiple trips. That way I can sample everything.

I also usually go to a buffet in the late morning or early afternoon before I've eaten anything, so I'm hungry. And then I usually don't eat in the evening, or maybe a very light meal.

I loved buffets when I was a teenager. I could fill up on okay food for a low price.

Now? The food isnt that great, and I can only eat maybe 2 plates. So the cost is prohibitive for the quality of the food.

Certain foods have higher or lower calories fat sugars etc. 2 plates or 4 depends on what one picks.

I don't eat enough to justify going to a buffet anymore. But when I was a teenager? Hell yea I'll eat tons of food for only $8 bucks. If I wanted quality I would cook my own damn food. When I am going out to eat it is more about convenience.

People feel the need to get the most value. I hate buffets for this reason I never eat enough for me to feel the price tag was worth it.

My family ate at a particularly expensive place once and my step father was insisting everyone eat as much as they could. I hated it. The food was far from worth the price.

I ate tons as a kid/teen at a buffet...as an adult? No. My palate has evolved and I cant eat more then a plate or two because most of it disgusts me.

"All you can eat" means just that for me and I'm not even American. A carvery for example is really good.
