As I said before, almost all of my international cousins from Germany, Brazil, and Vietnam all love the Avatar franchise and the name James Cameron is basically a household name in their communities. Sure, domestically, no one really sees the value in the Avatar films but internationally many of them, in fact, do. My cousins from Brazil literally took me to see it in IMAX 3D yesterday because where they live there wasn't a way to watch it in IMAX 3D from where they lived that was in driving distance apparently.

Makes sense 70% of the money is from international. I think the lack of plot/character developmwnt helps, just lets people see visuals for 3 hours

I mean sure the story is simple and it relies on typical family movie clicheds, but saying it has no character development is a flat out lie. I saw the movie and I can instantly tell what James Cameron was going for, simple story but full on immersion with its world building. I'm just fucking impressed how well the CGI blends so well with the human characters when they are side by side with each other. I'm used to abominations like She Hulk or the Dinosaurs from the recent Jurassic World franchise just standing out like a sore thumb with the terrible CGI that it's nice to see it well implemented. Also sometimes less is more. Simple stories to elevate other aspects of the movie sometimes helps it as well. His other iconic movies like Terminator 2 and Aliens all have cliched simple stories that been done to death but yet are considered Iconic because of how well done the movies are made. On the opposite end of the spectrum, sometimes you make your story too Complex you get stuff like Tenant that it becomes "exposition" the movie or it being a convoluted mess like with the Kingdom Hearts series.

I'm not 100% defending the movie though as I do have gripes with it like the editing from scene to scene sometimes, the movie length (especially the third act), and the dialogue being forgettable (which is weird because James Cameron is known to have iconic lines as well). It's still a solid 8/10 movie from me.

That could be, but in the GQ interview, he's pretty upfront about it being a bad move and very costly with endless revisions, but that he ultimately likes the challenge.

He mentions 3rd or 4th, which are Titanic and The Force Awakens/Infinity War at around the $2 billion mark.

I think he's the one person who can actually aim that high and not be laughed out the room.

Sure but in order to get that headline you have to assume that he's had that conversation recently, that he knows off the top of his head what the top 5 highest grossing movies are and that this anecdote was meant to be precisely accurate.

This is an issue with internet reporting in general. A statement in an interview is not supposed to be used to figure out what a movie needs to make a return. Obviously it's an expensive movie but this was not him 'admitting' that the movie needs to make 2 billion.

Why wouldn't he know the top 5? 1 and 3 are his and he rereleased Avatar 1 when Endgame temporarily hit 1.

I get your overall point, but I'm still not seeing why this should be discounted. I guess we'll find out if they cancel 4 and 5.

It will reach it over time like the first film, I doubt it will reach it in its theater life. I personally think they're trying to make Avatar a franchise like Star Wars and MCU which then will be worth the "investment".

Outside of the movie. Even the Avatar portions of Disneyland and Disneyworld have to really reach to provide good experiences, because there is little frame of reference.

Dude, you're not making any sense. Both Avatar films are all about world building and getting immersed in them. The first movie was about the forest Naavi's and the second movies were about the Ocean Naavi's. In both films, they got heavily in showing their way of life and their ecosystem. There's going to be like 3 more Avatar films made and no doubt each of them will probably be showing a different types of Naavi's from different enviroments.

It's only expected to keep tabs on the sequel.

Maybe he knows. Maybe he doesn't. The guy is really busy so it wouldn't surprise me if he doesn't know what 4 or 5 are.

Regardless it's an issue constantly happening on the internet. Articles, social media posts and the internet take quotes and treat them like official statements instead of snippets from a conversation that they actually are. When people talk with their actual voice they don't tend to speak in exact figures and terms. They exaggerate. They use tone to communicate. All of that is lost and clickbait takes advantage.

Like for all we know Cameron embellished the story to give it higher stakes. That tone is only obvious in person.

It happens on the internet constantly. It's like if people read a quote in the article people forget it's from a person talking. It also just happened with Naughty Dog director Neil Druckmann.

Media interviews about the director's latest movie don't just happen in a void. They are done for PR to give people information. Sure, sometimes stuff is taken out of context, but he's talking about it in detail.

I'm not out to hate the movie (haven't seen it either), but yeah, the previous one kinda dragged out the casual-ness of movie-goers.

I remember seeing a lot of "I love that movie!" from people on FB who don't ever really speak on movies, and when they went into detail, it was all about visuals. Not really because of how it sized up as an overall movie.
