The first movie got released a bunch of times. Its total success wasn't all from a single box office run.
And people wanted to pay to see it those times, so it made money. Thats not cheating

movies get re released all the time and it doesnt measurably add to their box office totals

look at the Morbius re release, as an extreme example

Yeah, that could be it. It would put it around $300-$400 million less.

Media interviews about the director's latest movie don't just happen in a void. They are done for PR to give people information. Sure, sometimes stuff is taken out of context, but he's talking about it in detail.
Cameron's quote is obviously incorrect. There is no way it needs $2 billion to break even.

The budget has been reported as between $360 and $450 million. I have seen a suggestion that it could be as high as $500 million. Let's just go with that to be conservative with the profits.

Studios make half of what it grosses, so it would need $1 billion. However, there are also marketing and distribution costs. The typical big budget movie is around $100 million, but some of the biggest go as high as $150 or more. Let's say $200 million to be conservative again.

That is a worst case break even of $1.2 billion, which would make it the highest break even point in history. Avatar will likely end between $1.6 and $1.9 billion, so that is at least $400 to $700 million in profit just from the theatrical release.
