I've read it has an $80 million budget, which basically makes that a catastrophically bad opening.

No one cares about old Hollywood anymore. Also doesn't help that a good portion of the country can't leave their house rn lol

I watched it. It was pretty meh. Had some good scenes but the ending was massively pretensious.

I have always been annoyed by movies about "Hollywood" and movie making. So self indulgent. Making movies about yourself, etc.

Same. Maybe back in the earlier days of super stars and glamorous Hollywood, people idolized the lifestyle. Nowadays, there isn't the same kind of romanticism surrounding actors and red carpet events.

Hollywood is a dying breed, tbh. Especially their self-aggrandizing events like the Oscars and such. Their egos and imperfections are way more obvious in the age of social media when everyone has a camera.

The kneejerk hostility people have towards anything like that is really quite bizarre.

It was so so so so bad. Just self-indulgent Hollywood masturbation.

There is certainly a good story to be told about the transition from silent films to talkies and how it impacted the people in the industry. But this movie was absolutely not it.

It was a pretty film though. And the performances were generally really good. Also the sequence on the sets of the silent films in the beginning was really good. Unfortunately that was a small fraction of a three hour slog.

its probably a decent film at least. I just have no interest in going out to see another hollywood movie about hollywood. maybe ill catch it on netflix or HBO Max in a couple months

Sure, but even the "gritty realistic" take on Hollywood stardom is getting to the point where it's remarkably played out.

And for the record, I rarely use "Hollywood is in love with itself" as a criticism. Obviously a movie about making movies is going to be inherently self-congratulatory. That's fine.

So when I say this thing was downright masturbatory and the film was worse for it. I mean it.

Yeah, it's particularly galling with how out of touch so many Hollywood types are today.

And whoever decided to budget this 3 hour plus movie at 110 million was either flat out insane or laundering money.

Honestly, the trailer did not interest me at all. And to hear that it's 3 fucking hours? Hard pass

I had no idea what is was even about. The commercials were not very clear.
