Me. I even took a year break from it while it was going on. I remember thinking that there's no way it's going to be the final boss despite how long it was. I was thinking it might be like Vanilla Ice and Jobin/Kaato was the actual final boss. But nah, Jobin got taken out more anti-climatically than part 7's Hot Pants. And then Araki just shoved in Kei and Kaato's death because he realized "whoops it's the final boss already, I need some of these characters I've stockpiled and did nothing with to die".
Besides the obvious stuff like the flash-forward not happening I remember when there was a panel hinting at Jobin's Speed King having a secret mechanic nobody knows about but that never happened and in the end it was just a worse Killer Queen.
Still better than Manga One Punch Man's Monster Association arc though. And I'm hopefully expecting part 9 to address some of these issues.

I dunno why part 5 gets so much hate. I feel like it was a typically well structured Jojo. That's way more than you can say for Jojolion which is literally just flat out bad and barely coherent.

I don't even think I liked any of the characters. Gappy felt like the dullest fucking MC thus far. Like all the Jojos have pretty similar base personality but he in particular had so little of it. His origin story is more interesting than the guy himself. Giorno on the other hand at least had sass on top of a really strong sense of justice. He does get outstaged by his allies a bit but he's clearly an extension of them, rather than Gappy who basically only associates himself with the fruit hat guy and Yasuho.

Yeah I'll fully admit, I don't really know what the fuck Soft and Wet or Paisly Park actually does. It feels like if Araki needs something to be done, it just works. At least with the previous Protagonist stands, I get the "logic" behind the powers at minimum.

I like part 5 but I'm not impartial. It was the first manga or comic book I ever read. I like that it has relatively little baggage compared to the rest of Jojo. It's a part that's pretty focused on action and it marked a new direction of Araki's style.

I remember a post on /a/ who pointed out "there are three stands in Jojolion that do whatever Araki needs them to" (S&W, PP, and Paper Moon King)

By the end of JJL, Paisley Park can apparently hack any electronic and also take on its properties, but in exchange it moves from device to device at the speed of a person more-or-less rather than as fast as electricity. An educated Yasuho could probably quickly become the richest person in the world by hacking crypto and also learn a ton of government secrets. I guess Kyo had to bring the phone to Josuke because PP needs a conduit to act around as a surrogate for the stand user's body.

Honestly I think Soft & Wet was pretty fine until ~99 when it became a gun. It's mentioned that 'something' is spinning at high speeds in the bubbles to shred things, and then for the rest of the manga it's just accepted that Josuke's stand is now Tusk.

Soft and Wet was originally supposed to be like a stand that steals a property off whatever btw. It literally just turns into balls of destruction at one point and the soapy stuff it used to do is just gone entirely lol.

Then again, Gold Experience also used to have that overloading on life shit in the beginning. But at least that one was like ok so if Giorno hits you once, then it has to be over 100%, so I can sorta see why it would never be brought up. But Soft and Wet just loses all that makes it interesting and manages to be even more unga bunga than like early Tusk or Star Platinum.

But Tusk had the Spin mechanic to make it more than just a limited gun. Star Platinum was also a precursor to a logical progression of power. The incredibly fast reaction it had was probably an infantile version of stopping time.

I don't get why Soft and Wet does half of what it does. I mean what even was the payoff for the one person fused into 2 shit?

He was possibly the worst in my opinion. Being a borderline Gary stu, with no personality or unique traits at all. Always and consistently being 1 step ahead of his opponent's. To the point that all his fights after black sabbath felt like a sequence of events rather then actual fights.

And with Half his abilitys also being either under utilized, nonsensical, and or were completely forgotten.

Seriously, compared to most other stands. Gold experiance is a mess.

i feel like a lot of early Jojolion was Araki trying the Abrams mystery bos shtick and then at some point realizing that he had to actually tie it all together. >_>

Nearly all of the characters are either nothing (Giorno, Abacchio, Fugo, Trish), barely passable (Bruno, Mista), or annoying (Narancia). Diavolo's personality is "i'm evil", and not in an endearing way like Dio. It has by far the most dogshit fights of any part (Baby Face, Rolling Stone, Man in the Mirror, two yachts, and let's not forget the ENTIRE FINAL ENCOUNTER THAT TAKES FOREVER AND IS ONE OF THE WORST FIGHTS IN THE ENTIRE SERIES), Golden Experience just does whatever it wants (vaccine snake will never be forgiven), and fate is such a terrible theme to be bludgeoned with over and over when Araki doesn't actually have anything to say about it. Giorno's motivation to control the mafia is Drugs Are Bad and he doesn't take issue with ANYTHING else related to the mob, and then even THIS motivation fizzles away after a few fights. I do not understand what anyone sees in Part 5. It has exactly 3 good fights and that's it.

I think that's probably a bit harsh. The flashback scene to the Michael Jackson guy explains Giorno's actual motivation for becoming a mafia. He's fine with killing etc., but he's specifically against children getting into the mess of it. Giorno is still a gangster but he works by an honor system. Bucciarati's crew is the only one he's found over the years who work under the same honor system.

While I think King Crimson was horribly explained (the power, in concept, is actually a causality 5 second teleportation, not erasing 5 seconds. They constantly confuse it because things in those 5 seconds should actually have no consequence in the entire world, yet things within the supposedly skipped 5 seconds happen at random, and of course King Crimson can randomly affect it as if he's in a The World type freeze.), that was still a fun duel mostly because of Gold Experience Requiem.

About fate being a bad theme, I feel like it's not really all that bullshit in the grand scheme of how stands work. It's more easily explained as a stand power than anything. I feel like this is an odd point, as fate was already a stand power all the way back in Stardust Crusader.

Diavolo himself is entertaining to watch because of his fixation. Worse executed than somebody like Kira, but they essentially share similar motivation. But Diavolo is much more in the middle of infamy than Kira who's mostly in the shadows fulfilling smaller goals.

I do hate Trish and Narancia, but Narancia himself was at least a voice of naivety amongst a bunch of criminals. Trish was just a side quest tbh.

Abacchio's motivation was also pretty interesting. Also he becomes a good mid-arc motivation tool for the main gang. I don't think he was nothing either.

That's a lot more than you could say about any side characters in Jojolion. I genuinely dunno why the Higashikata family even exists in more than the chapters where they're starring. The only attachment they have to the overarching plot all the way to the end is that they live in the same house lol.

Can agree with Giorno, Fugo, and Trish being meh (Abacchio is interesting if he only did more) but I completely disagree with the fights. I think it has some of the best fights in the series. La Squadra is by far the best minor villain group in the series and La Squadra fight except Melone is top tier. Notorious BIG and Green Tea/Oasis of the Elite Group were also great with only Clash/Talking Head being eh although I personally liked it. If anything it's the other way around where I can count on one hand the fights that aren't good in part 5, those being Black Sabbath, Soft Machine, Babyface, and sadly the final fight with Diavolo himself (the chase for the arrow against SCR is cool albeit not final boss material).

Part 5 is also when Araki really got into his groove of writing Stand battles that are actually back-and-forth fights rather than "protags get their ass kicked for 90% of the fight before discovering the enemy's main weakness and then one shotting them" that most of part 3 and even part 4 is. Unfortunately, part 8 seemed to regress back into that for a bunch of fights due to the concentration of long range/automatic stands (including the final boss). Ozon Baby is a strong exception.
