Like if someone said i live at 223 Street, how would you find that on a huge map?

Indices of street names that list the map coordinate.

E.g.
Rose Parkway - H7

So you'd go to grid coordinate H7 and do a 'find Waldo' exercise for Rose Parkway.

You look for streets that start in the 200s, go up to 223, and then find Street. You can also find Street first, and then look for 223.

Some places all the # Streets will go the same direction [North and South] and the Street names will go East and West, which helps narrowing it down as well. Then some places have the Street names in alphabetical order , which makes it even easier.

  1. Ask someone for the general location.
  2. Find the street.
  3. See how the addresses are counting down.
  4. See which side of the street is even numbers and which side is odd numbers.
  5. ???
  6. Profit

My dad is a relic of the 70s and he says quite frankly we wouldnt make it back then because he had to pay attention to street names and land marks and also use maps and just do general random drives around town and remember stuff from doing that. Doesnt even seem possible to me.

I remember Map Quest but according to my dad in the 1970s you would talk on the phone with a new friend/job/etc and theyd tell you the directions to get there street by street. Sounds impossible I cant imagine meeting a woman trying to spit my game AND remember a bunch of turns and street names.

If you were going to someone's house, they would give you directions based on major roads and highways. E.g. "Get on highway 12 east and take a left onto 183rd. Take a left onto Applegate. We are the 4th house on the right, house is blue and we have 2 trucks parked out front. If you see the storage units, you've gone too far."

If you were going to a hotel you or something you would get similar directions off an interstate / highway.

In yellow pages they would often put cross roads they were near, maybe something like "3 blocks north of Sprague on Sharpe Ave"

Things like the airport they expected you to be able to follow signs.

You had to have a concept of the compass directions, too. Most of the people I come by these days dont seem to know east from north from west from south. Its honestly just easier to give the address and let them use the map app. It helps when your city is laid out like a grid, and not with winding, zig-zagging streets.

I honestly have some sort of dyslexia when it comes to east and west.

The only time I lived somewhere without fucking it up several times was Albuquerque, exclusively because there's a bigass mountain to the east.

Living on the coast has its benefits, I grew up a few miles form the ocean and no matter where i am I always know which direction the pacific is. If I get confused I head outside and so long as as the sun is out, i can figure it out.

Map indexes were pretty easy to use.

Cities would have detailed maps of streets (some even had shots from planes) and you could look up the specific square that an address was in through the index.

Back in those days, a lot of people had their personal info on a public file and you could get a lot if you just knew someones name.

TBH check your local library. After that age died out a lot of that stuff probably got donated for archive purposes.

Or go down to the local records office. They still exist.

Rand McNally Road Atlas for your particular state. You kept it in your car glove compartment. It had spiral binding and thick paper.

The book was separated into the categories state, region, county, city, district, street. You would drill down from a list of ranges for each category to the address like a choose your own adventure.

I'm just old enough to remember navigating without a mapquest print out. Usually you just needed to know how to get to the street and then you would figure out where the address was, based on what block you were on.

It was really straight forward if the cross streets were numbered streets. For example, in Los Angeles, there's Central Avenue. And the cross streets are mostly numbered streets, IE. 45th street, 46th street, etc. All of the addresses on Central, in between 45th Street and 46th Street are in the 4500's. So you'd call that the "4500 block". All of the addresses in between 46th Street and 47th Street, are in the 4600's. And that trend continues as you go down. Most streets are set up this way, And one side of the street always ends in even numbers, while the other side is odd numbers. So if you saw 4504 on one side, then you know 4503 would be on the other side of the street.

So even if you didn't know exactly where an address was, you just needed to find the street and figure out how far you were based on what addresses you were seeing on that block. Here's a screenshot of an address on Central (it's a library, not doxxing someone's home lol).

Nah, I only need it the first 2 or 3 times. After that, I have the general layout down and can go off of memory. Used GPS the first 2 times I went to my gf's place. Now I remember all of the turns after I get off the freeway. Easy peasy.
