It was because when Carol Danvers first showed up in the MCU, it was being implied that she would be more powerful than the Avengers, with barely any build up. People didn't like someone new just appearing out of nowhere and taking the spotlight

Endgame showed later that she wasn't as strong as people feared. She is fine. She's unliked by people in the comics too. The character is meant to be abrasive. She was the villain in Civil War 2. She isn't perfect. If she had single handedly solved Endgame, it would be a problem, but it didn't happen
This has nothing to do with why people disliked Brie Larson.

Also TC, people on the internet just get hostile towards women when they are outspoken during interviews. She's never said anything that bad.

"It's not all her faults that make people dislike her, they just hate women"

This doesn't really hold water since other women in the same position are not criticized.

Is the anti vax idiot from Black Panther only criticized because she's a chick too?
And is MTG only criticized because she's "a woman who is outspoken in interviews!"?

Hell Oprah is the biggest female celbrity since Queen Liz died and she's not famous for her quiet modesty and refusal to make statements.

It's reductive to handwave criticism of women like that. You're the one being sexist.

A woman is just as capable of being an asshole as a man. Larson's sexism, racism and attitude are just as fair to criticize as Ben Shapiros or John Waynes

But, just no. She was making a statement about how the vast majority of critics are white men. This is a fact, and of course that can impact things. Look at why the Academy and the Globes had to be pushed to have actual diversity in their voting bodies.

No that's an opinion.

She never said "Most critics are white men" let alone "most professional critics are white men" she said she didn't care what white men thought and declared movies as "not for white people" to invalidate their views

The fact is she said:

"[Audiences] are not allowed enough chances to read public discourse on these films by the people that the films were made for. I do not need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn't work for him about A Wrinkle in Time. It wasn't made for him. I want to know what it meant to women of colour, to biracial women, to teen women of colour, to teens that are biracial, And for the third time, I do not hate white dudes, they are just facts, they are not my feelings,"

That's just flat out racism and sexism.

If she said "I wish we had more POC and women in the field of media critics" and then promoted some, no one would criticize her. In fact most would mega-phone her.

But the dismissal of white males view as invalid because "it's not for you!" is fucked up

And you would not be defending it if the chick who played Rey in Star Wars was saying she doesn't give a shit what black women think because Star Wars "wasn't made for them"

You'd be calling it racist/sexist. Because it is. Cjdawg would be having a meltdown.

And that's just 1 quote. Larson has expressed this view multiple times. She is sexist against men and has weird thoughts on white dudes.

Simple as. It's not because she's a chick, it's because she's a nasty human being. Flawed like everyone else, just worse than most.

People in free society have every right to critcize that and you're doing a diservice to everyone to lazily defend the racism/sexism by going "No, it's just because she's a chick. Chicks can't have personality flaws or be wrong. Nerds are just raging."

and of course that can impact things. Look at why the Academy and the Globes had to be pushed to have actual diversity in their voting bodies.

Right?

I'm not following how means Larson is above criticism for her views and attitude?

As eye roll inducing as that is, kinda both directions I guess, that's a weird reason to suddenly be hyper critical of a person's acting ability and any movie they star in if it's not something you apply to every other performer and movie. It makes you come across as shallow and bandwagony. It's just ridiculous.

Not every "issue" actually is one, or requires a hard stance and constant reinforcement of your opinion. It's weird, that shit baffles me with people online. You see it with al kinds of shit, too.

Nah you're right I'm oversimplifying.

I just don't think she said anything that justified the intense hostility the internet aimed at her back then.

That Tweet about the TSA agent is pretty awful, but I feel like she toned it down not long after. Possibly cause of all the hate.

Her quote about A Wrinkle in Time made complete sense to me. The movie was made, at least in part, to provide role models to disenfranchised groups.

Due to history and systematic issues, comments about white people can't be held to the same exact standard as comments about black people, for instance.

It always baffles me how people don't understand this very important distinction.

I don't do much get the impression she's completely dismissing "old white dudes opinions" as saying the opinion pool lacks much needed diversity - especially when it comes to diverse projects. I don't know the context around that quote so it's all I have to go with. I kinda feel like - with just that - us having two completely different takeaways says something. I'm not sure what exactly it says, but it says something.

If she said "Due to history and systematic issues, comments about white people can't be held to the same exact standard as comments about black people, for instance." and then promoted some POC or female critics or outlets, nobody would give a shit. Infact her statements would probably be given a microphone.

Look how carefully and tactfully you made that statement.

That's not what she said, she laid into white dudes, and this isn't the only time she's done that. She has adversial , anti-social and toxic outlooks towards white men. That's racism and sexism anyway you square it and she's not immune from criticism for it.

I'd repeat my hypothetical example of Rey in Star Wars talking shit about black women's views.
