I remember finding a random post on some obscure forum that said this scene is actually a pretty good indication that Terry really cares about Bruce. He was the only one to care that it was his birthday and spent weeks trying to get him a present.

Probably should have realized Bruce would hate it, but you can't win 'em all.

Was Batman Beyond a comic thing first or was it a TV show first?

Imagine having been a high profile crimefighter in your prime combatting sociopathic murderers who damn near cut your thread while almost ending the entire city in multiple grimdark massacres, then in your old age you sit and watch a theatrical recount that reduces it all down to playful dance numbers with a happy ending tied around it.

It's how a lot of war torn veterans feel watching Hollywood soaked political flicks.

Batman Beyond isn't exactly set canon in the main comic universe , I don't think. I think it is meant to be an alternate timeline. I'm pretty sure the real canon future is that Damian will be the next Batman

It is. But Beyond is not the canon future fated for the main universe. Beyond happens in a different universe

All movies, all cartoons, all video games, and all what if stories in thr comics, are set in different universes than Earth One. Beyond is the future of the Batman Animated Series universe
