Do you agree with AVGN's view?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QYlAed4EaPc&feature=youtu.be

He says about the Garfield level Catsablanca Man I miss the 90s when it was still commonplace to reference movies from the 40s. Nowadays if you make a Casablanca reference the kids wont know what the fuck youre talking about

I mean he's not wrong. There used to be film noir parodies in cartoons back in the 90s. That doesn't happen in most cartoons past 2000. Hell my 14 year old BIL doesn't even know any Looney Toons past Bugs and Daffy.

One thing I will say, is that because there such a quick turnover in media and SO much stuff out there, nothing really has the staying power it used to have.

Simply because of the way we consume media nowadays, along with the way it's distributed, there's few movies now that will get the kind of re-play that movies of the past got. "Back in my day" a movie would come out in the theatres, you would maybe see it twice, than you'd have to anticipate a 6-10 month wait to see it again on VHS. Maybe you rented it 2-3 times before you waited ANOTHER 6 months to see it on HBO.

Now you don't even bother going to the theatre because you know it'll be streaming somewhere within 3 months. You watch it once, and move on to the next thing.

Nothing really has staying power anymore. Like, what movie that came out in the last 10-15 years will todays teenagers tell their kids are MUST SEE movies, like us 40 year old's did with movies like Jaws, Goonies, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, etc.?

He isn't actually dodging. He's totally out of their grasp. When he made fans of female Ghostbusters mad, we learned that you cant get him with online attacks. He doesn't even know most of the time he's being attacked. He doesn't pay much attention to what the internet says about him and isn't online for very long each day

He relies on more tech savvy people to help upload his videos even. When the Ghostbusters crowd were mad, he didn't know for months until someone in real life told him about it

A lot of people have talked about the generational divide in TV. Millennials and older generations had to watch the movies and shows that were available when they were available. This created a collective sense of pop culture stretching as far back as TV would replay or reference.

Zoomers and younger don't rely on TV and instead access most of their entertainment at will. They don't rewatch episodes of The Simpsons hundreds of times because they don't have to. So they're generally less aware of past pop culture.
Though, they're probably more connected to a wide variety of generations of music because musical trends on TikTok shift so rapidly. Jimmy Urine mentioned that MSI is definitely more popular now than it was 20 years ago.

But I also have....a real job? I mean I dunno, like me, he's not from the generation that was just born not wanting to work, so I'm just surprised he's still doing this crap.

He also stopped being funny more than a decade ago when he ran out of decent material.

ah yes, the "generation that was just born not wanting to work". it's their fault, that's surely what it is. it's not the fact that in today's economy they can either not work and be poor and struggling to get by, or work and still be poor and struggling to get by.

This makes sense. Definitely a more hive mind mentality. Pop culture is now Tiktok which is mindless 30 second vids which are uninspired and totally forgetable.

This makes me laugh because my kids despite having access to Netflix, Disney and Prime, legitimately rematch things again and again and again.

I spoke my eldest about it and how it made me laugh, seeing him with all this choice doing what I did as a kid, that had to watch whatever was on lol.

Streaming kinda destroyed watching anything you haven't heard of, honestly.

Rather than watching a different TV show, I knowv so many people who just watch the same block of TV shows, and then whatever the streaming flavor of the month is and nothing else.

It's weird to me.

I always thought that one was odd. I was really into music at a young age and got into the Beatles when I was 8. I knew the reference and thought it was weird they dedicated the main plot to that reference cause it would have went over kids heads.

I was a bit of a cartoon fiend as a kid and Im just about as used to cartoons from the 40s/50s as the 90s/2000s. They were played very often, and just with access to basic Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.
