They're too busy giving up trying to learn how the game works and quitting out to some freeplay MOBA in the middle of their first session of any real game to even think about us.

I'm not entirely sure young gamers even exist.

The term "gamer" tends to imply more than just "person who plays games". It implies someone who defines their personality and lifestyle by gaming. The sort of person who isn't just playing tons of different games, but who is also listening to game soundtracks, watching videos about games, laughing a game-related memes, telling game-related jokes, buying game-related merch (and when I was a kid, eating game-related cereal!), and generally living a life where gaming has a huge influence.

Does the younger generation now have that sort of personal identity in significant numbers? Sure, they play games (even if it's only Fortnite), but it feels like they're much less inclined to define themselves or have their interests revolve around gaming as a whole in the way the gamers of the past couple of generations did. Obviously I'm judging solely based on anecdotal evidence from kids I know via friends and family, but it seems to me like everyone young are way more inclined to define themselves more by Internet culture in general and not by games - even the ones who do play games.

It almost feels like the rise of casual gaming in general and mobile gaming specifically have sort of killed the mindset of the gamer who defines themselves by gaming. Now gaming is just something you do, rather than who you are.

I could be wrong, though - I'm not spending most of my time playing online games trying to chat up teenager gamers to ask them about their lives. Not least because that would be kind of creepy as fuck.

Interesting observation. I can say they absolutely still exist: my high school psychologist wife runs into many of them. :)

I think that there are probably as many as ever - or more - although they're a much smaller percentage of the gaming whole given that everyone now plays some sort of video games and many are casual.

Lmao whut??

Believe or not kids make up the biggest percentage of gamers.

Its really obvious when you go from console gaming all your life to pc gaming. As an avid player of multiplayer games, all the games are far more populated on console and its far more likely youll stomp a considerable amount of the players. Where as PC is or used to be mostly adults and its rather common for a a game to be deserted on PC while it thrives on console(where most kids still play). I say used to because while its still not huge, streaming has severely boosted popularity of PC.

Considering the average age of people who play games, this is almost certainly statistically incorrect.

At this point I think the median age is actually starting to push 40.

Speaking as a 45-year old console gamer, this is kind of a horseshit assumption. For multiple reasons.

People can gatekeep whoever based on their social stature where they might judge, however they cannot take away the adeptness, passion, and shared memories with others like them. The market draws in the young and veteran gamers out there largely because they treat them both as gamers inviting them to new things. Games are designed keeping in mind the appeals, for the most part, to those into one shotting the series (story, GamePlay) or diehards that would commit it (lore, tourneys) like a pro. Some could have been a fan for years mastering it, or a new kid getting up to speed in less, but in the end, anyone who loves games can be a gamer. They're meant to bring people together maybe drawing a line on their likes and dislikes about what's different but opinions are meant for seeing new, peaceful points what could better their experiences or lack thereof.

Personally, I think it's most likely that playing some amount of video games is starting to become more ubiquitous across all age groups as the younger games become middle aged, rather than gamers starting to just be older.

I wouldn't go that far, maybe just somebody who considers games a bigger part of their life than just a way to kill time or socialize.

It actually is a pet peeve of mine when I see "your whole personality is just defined by this thing" or even describing someone with "no personality" like that is totally antithetical with my view of personality in general

From what I've seen, the younger gamers a billion times less judgemental, and are more likely to see non-cishet men, and women in general as actual people, so I'm gonna say yes as long as you don't try to group them all in.

Also, nickel for every 20 something girl I've come across on twitch that started off with Fortnite and moved onto something like Skyrim, The Witcher 3, and 2077. And again, they're usually really nice to people who are nice to them. I'll take them over most of the men I come across that mostly wanna hang out with other men.

They're also more likely to be interested in things besides games too, which I especially appreciate.

Does it really matter? If gaming is a hobby of yours then you are a gamer. You dont hafta be obsessed to the point where it defines your entirely personality. Sounds unhealthy. And it doesn't matter whether you started playing in the 70s or the 2000s.
