Any cartoon or things for kids on Youtube is flagged as for Youtube Kids, and comments are always disabled. Youtube says it's to prevent child endangerment, but that's not really a thing in comments.

It's actually to cover their asses from parents complaining about rude comments/discussion, and also because parents just give their small kids tablets and phones to browse YT, and nonsensical comments pop up from them.

They have a separate app for YouTube Kids where you can only see kids videos. They could have just cloned such videos so the version on the kids app has no comments but the version on normal YouTube does

But they are too lazy to do that

Even worse is I've seen clips from The Simpsons, Harley Quinn, and South Park be on Youtube Kids as well. It's flagged by algorithms, and doesn't even work to begin with.

I've seen videos that were independent parodies of cartoons get flagged for kids. Where it's obvious it's not the official show. Totally different art style. And the characters do adult shit. But youtube will still make it for kids

I love this interpretation of their relationship, them ribbing on each other and being sassy compared to the old school "clark kent pines for lois while she has eyes only for superman"

I'm biased because DCAU is the greatest and STAS is my favorite tas but this is my favorite interpretation of the character.

The algorithm disabled comments at one point if it detected "kids" content, but the video owners can still enable them again along with the history.

Iirc if you put a sound clip of "fuck!" on the videos, they won't tag it for kids.

In place of making some things " for kids" they should just have kids accounts that doesn't have comments on them. Because that same kid who is "protected" while watching a 30 year old cartoon. Won't be if they go to "Funniest and Cutest Pug Dog Videos Compilation". So they are still at risk. So I don't see how this helps people.

I think it varies somewhat. In the DCAU, Clark and Superman are very much the same person, they just change clothes. Sometimes Clark is a bit more of a persona, more slobbish and cowardly than he actually is. My impression is that the golden age Superman was the epitome of this with Clark 100% being an act he put on, but I'm not positive about that.

It's definitely much more of a Batman thing nowadays.

When did they first start forcibly turning pre-existing videos into youtube kids and removing existing comments, since then no one has complained enough for them to change it back? I noticed that sometimes if enough people complain, companies do listen and backpedal.

I forget sometimes that a lot of the character development for the original 7 was actually in the first Justice League, which I still love of course I just rewatch Unlimited more often while only cherry picking JL episodes to rewatch

I think I actually like the original JL cartoon more than Unlimited. The tighter cast was just more fun.

USA made a law in 1998 called Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA), which means that US-based websites are not allowed to collect data from children below 13 years. This is why so many websites got a "You must be above 13 years to use this website" rule
Youtube also had that rule, but they were pretty good at determinate the age of users based on what videos they watched. So they knew that there was a 98% chance that these accounts were used by children below 13. While that was against COPPA, nobody could prove anything and nobody really cared.
Until Youtube got the great idea to sell targeted ads space that were made for children below 13. This was proof that they knew that the users were below 13 and that they collected their data.
So they got hit hard in 2020.
And to prevent it from happening again, they made a deal with COPPA about putting all the blame on the content creators in the future.
To isolate the what they believe is below age content to Youtube Kids, where comments etc are turned off, they simply show COPPA that they are not collecting data from this group of users.
No complaining will being it back, and trust me, people have complained.

I like the one in the adventures of Lois and Clark where a journalist discovers Clark has like 12 Superman outfits in his closet

And the way Clark proves his innocence is he projects a hologram of Superman to stand next to him in front of a crowd and explain that he just gets Clark to do his laundry

People have been complaining constantly about it, but Youtube isn't budging.

It's not really "youtube"'s fault.

This was the result of a lawsuit Youtube tried to fight and lost, stating that Youtube videos aimed at children allowed children to see targeted ads and post in the comments and this broke the law.

Youtube can't really "Budge" on this, it was imposed on them. They sure aren't happy about losing a ton of ad revenue.

That's a half truth

The targeted adds only came up if you were logged into a youtube account, which to get you had to create an account in which you confirmed you were over the age of 13.

They lost the case because the court decided that wasn't strignent enough to stop underage people from making an account. Which is true but is true every website on the internet including this one.

Very few sites demand you send copies of your ID to create an account.

This is one thing you really can't pin on Youtube. They don't like it any more than you do and they have no option to change it.

Why would an entirely seperate Youtube Kids app be enough when kids can just use the original main site? Which was the problem in the first place, that Youtube can't garantee that under 13s aren't making accounts.

The only solution to that would be to require that users scan their IDs when creating an account and people would be furious if Youtube did that.

Of all the things to be mad at Youtube about, this really is one they're not to blame for and have no choice in. They did the best they could.

They knew that they had users that were too young to use the website.
Which nobody cared about.
But then Youtube had to mess it up and say "Hey, you wanna sell ads that targets 5 years old kids? We got tons of users at that age, just give us money and we will show them for the correct age group!".
