i avoided watching it because i thought it was gonna be this really cheesy "Christmas spirit" movie. i finally gave it a chance a couple of months ago and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

See, here is where we can differ again - I think it is. I'll continue to do it as I feel as necessary and then have the resulting conversation that comes from it.

I just don't see the love for it. Jimmy Stewart is of course great, but I think there are much more 'iconic" Christmas movies. Hell, watched Miracle on 34th St. the other day and it has so much more charm.

It's an interesting look at how collectivist and anti-capitalist this country used to be during that timeframe. Mr. Potter, the big-money tycoon who ran the town, never did anything illegal (from what I recall), but he's portrayed about as repugnantly villainous as a character can get. I first saw it as an adult and found myself enjoying it far more than I expected.

The only scene I remember hating was the uncomfortable one where George (as a grown man) kissed his mother right on the mouth. Was that a thing back then?

It's always on NBC on Christmas Eve and it was on in the background and my family would eventually settle down and watch it every year and riff on it so it has a lot of nostalgia for me.

I watched it with my wife last year together and she fell asleep halfway through so I guess she didn't find it very riveting.

Hm I'm bored and have nothing better to do tonight's, so let me look at topics I have posted in the last 3-4 months. Specifically, topics I've made that could skew to either a positive or negative review of something. Should note that these are just a small subsect of my overall topic history.

"Positive" topics on: Westworld, The Walking Dead, Isle of Dogs, King of the Hill, Peacock, Roseanne, Halloween 3, Chucky, pumpkin beers, Cabin in the Woods, The Hateful 8, Bill and Ted 3, The Drew Carey Show, Dunkin Pumpkin Spice Goldfish crackers, Planes/Trains/Automobiles, Hank Schrader, American Horror Story, and Aaron Paul.

"Negative" topics: Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, people who don't use the search function, A Christmas Story 2, LED lights (arguing incandescent are better/great), Frosty (arguing Rudolph is better/great), independent toy stores that are scalping toys, anti-maskers, Jurassic World trilogy, WWE camera cuts, and that Community was better with Chevy Chase.

I mean... I don't know what to tell you, man. Either engage with the topic or don't. Plenty of other topics to post in. Obviously mine generally skew towards film/TV.

Contemporary audiences agreed with you, at least. The film bombed in theaters and didn't really pick up a following until it started getting spammed on network tv.

We, as a society, were literally memed into accepting this mediocre movie into our holiday canon.

....jk it's actually pretty fun. Not something I can really get into but it's fun background noise during the season.

Just like we have done to some extent with A Christmas Story and the 24/hour marathon. Love me some A Christmas Story though.
