Referring to someone who's nonbinary as "it" just seems rude and dismissive.
Simply due to the fact that "it" (and similar terms) refer to objects/animals and not people.

I suppose there are some if you look into it, but they certainly have yet to become mainstream.

"They" is plural though. Doesn't really work when referring to a single person.

i.e. "What does they think?"

I'd bet that you've used "they" in a singular context at least once today alone.

They is functional, but its definitely less than optimal in writing. It can make things very clunky to read. Its unfortunate that all the other alternatives try to stay too close to existing ones so they all sound dumb and no one wants to use them.

When someone is at the door and you don't know who it is how do you refer to them?

They knocked on the door. I will let them in.

In this instance of every day life for centuries this was an okay usage of they/them in a non-plural instance. But when it comes to gender identity all of a sudden it is a problem?

You used to be plural, with thou as the singular form. (You was also the formal singular.) Over time thou/thee/thy phased out, and now we have you for both singular and plural. English survived.

The only time I remember "they" being confusing is when Ezra Miller had that incident with the girl. And they kept using they to refer to Ezra. So it would be "They kidnapped the daughter" and it was confusing who kidnapped who.

Chaucer used the singular they. it's literally older than modern english. it predates the use of "th" to indicate that sound

'They' functions as a singular pronoun when the gender is unknown or irrelevant, or when the antecedent ignores or includes both. You can use it just fine. People find it awkward because English typically doesn't use it when the gender is known or relevant; but that doesn't make it invalid.

In Old English, the feminine pronoun (heo, hie) filled both purposes. We abandoned the female pronoun used in neuter situations in favour of the Old Norse neuter eir
