I have two very distinct memories to share in regards to Final Fantasy.

Before I ever knew what a JRPG was, my best friend and I played the original FF together on his NES (I had a Master System). We wrote a lot of notes down and clues. His dad had the guide but wouldn't let us use it until after we beat a section (he photocopied it, gave us pieces of it as we beat the game). I recall us getting to.... I think we were trying to get the Oxyale and into the battle eventually with Tiamat? Some of our best memories together was as like... 7 year olds trying to figure that game out.

I was a Sega kid growing up and I didn't really play any JRPG's. I was doing my paper route one day after the PS1 launched and a "friend" of mine (we both liked video games, he lived about 14 houses away) told me I had to come in and see this new awesome game and help him. I went into their living room and saw a pretty boy with a big sword and a guy with a gun for an arm fighting a robotic scorpion.

Yup, my first interaction with FF7 (and my re-introduction to JRPG's) was due to a kid in my neighborhood wanting help and knowing I loved video games. He was new to JRPG's and didn't pay attention when it told him not to attack when the tail went up. I read the tips and helped him out. Bought the game the next day and I'm pretty sure I played all the way to Junon in like, a weekend. >_>

I remember playing that goddamn Chocobo race in FFX, getting exactly 0.0 seconds, and having to redo the shit because you have to get less than 0.0 seconds even though the timer doesn't do that.

wow. 35 years of final fantasy. that's insane.

i remember as a kid i would rent random games at my local video rental store. when i was like 8 years old, a friend of mine recommended i play chrono trigger and i fell in love with RPGs

so when i saw that there was a game called Final Fantasy 3 (actually VI) made by SquareSoft, same as CT, i was like oh i gotta rent this. but since it was a rental and i was like 8 i never gave it the RESPECT it deserved.

but i remembered that name, final fantasy.

years later, my godmother randomly gave me a playstation for christmas. i had a n64 so i was really surprised. my older cousin came over one day and his mom told him to let me play some of his games. "you like rpgs right, here's final fantasy 7" "hey i know final fantasy"

AND WHOOOOAAA HERE WE GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

There is a moment during the final boss of FFXIV Endwalker where there is a callback to FFIV and it becomes obvious that you're making your comeback here and now. The final boss loses their composure, even. The moment I realized it was all over and we just had to heal and attack to finish it all, an 8 year journey since I first started playing... I started tearing up.

Its been a very long time since I cared about Final Fantasy, but to this day I have an enormous amount of nostalgia for I, IV, VI, VIII, and IX, and especially the first three mentioned.

FF1 opening with the hunt for Garland, going back for your reward, going to the new bridge and then bam an introduction and kickass musical theme to let you know that no no, now the games really starting. That whole thing you just did was only the tutorial, son.

They knocked it out of the park.

FFX's Lightning Dodging has always been the bane of my minigame existence. Then one night in college, I stumbled home drunk, fired up the PS2, and beat it perfectly, 200 in a row on my first try. To date that is the only time I've ever beaten Lightning Dodging and unlocked Lulu's ultimate weapon.

The time I saved in Riovanes during my first playthrough of FFTactics and almost ruined my entire file. I still can't believe I managed to get through with a combination of lucky crits and not being countered. Of course, after the first fight, you then have to defeat the next one, and I did it (eventually) without knowing about the Yell/Accumulate trick.

This is why I always remind people not to save in Riovanes (without a separate file) because you may ruin your love of FFT! Ignorance is self-sabotaging in this case.

I was browsing my local video game rental store, and I saw just a simple red and black box on the shelf. It had a sword, a shield, and the word Fantasy on it. I loved knights and medieval shit, and this looked straight in my ballpark. I rented it, took it home, popped it in my Super Nintendo, and was hooked from the first flight of the Red Wings. I've been a fan ever since.

I thought of myself as a Nintendo fanboy. I got a Nintendo 64 for Christmas one year. Love the system, but I owned maybe three games for it. I did a console swap with a school friend of mine. I gave him my Nintendo 64 with GoldenEye, and he gave me his PlayStation with Final Fantasy 7. I needed this game. Once I got my console back from my friend, I traded it in to a pawn shop to buy a PlayStation with Final Fantasy 8 and Soul Blade. I got Final Fantasy 7 a little bit later.

I was too young to understand FF1 when it first came out. Went back and beat it on NES when I was in junior high. My brother wanted to try and beat it too, so he and a friend started to play it. They got to Chaos and beat him in one round by casting quake. Which has something like a 1 in 200 chance of being successful.

The effect FF 6 had on my development cannot be understated. It was the first video game I played that really showed me the medium could produce something artistic and meaningful. It set the bar for similar games experiences, and in one or two categories it has yet to be topped; I still have yet to see an ending sequence that's more artful and satisfying than 6's.

I was a very very small spider when I played FF1 on NES. I didn't understand what was happening when I left the town and entered a battle. I had no concept of turn based battles. I just liked roaming the castle. Never actually played it beyond that.

ok so during high school i missed 2 months of school due to pneumonia
i had never been so sick in my entire life. first time i ever had been so sick i was throwing up which was not a pleasant experience.
well final fantasy X-2 was new and i had gotten a copy
i played the hell out of it for those 2 months. beat it multiple times and in general just loved it
it made those 2 months less of a miserable experience and is why the game will always have a special place in my heart.

i actually owned X-2 before X
i had played X at a friends house and we had got to luca and the boss on the al bhed ship just before the blitzball game.
but everything post luca i experienced in X-2 first

I remember on a trip to Spain I beat all of Final Fantasy 2 and had a great time with it. I haven't played it since then so I associate the game with Spain. 4 I remember being the first game to make me cry because I really liked Tellah. In general I just love 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 though. I regularly replay most of those.

Dissidia is good too

I have two memories. I never liked playing RPGs, I enjoyed watching them more. My uncle was at Bahamut in FF4 and kept getting wiped by his megaflare. Defeated, he turned off the game. Having watched the game, I told him he should try using reflect. Sure enough it worked!

Secondly, I finally got the courage to try FF6 out. The whole ATB system made me nervous but I remember getting all the way to the Imperial Base on my first run.

I rented FF 6 at least three times before finally purchasing it, and I never managed to make it farther than the Floating Continent. When you're young, beating a video game / overcoming an obstacle still feels like a genuine accomplishment rather than an expected outcome; so getting past it (and saving Shadow to boot) was always one of those far-off impossible goals to my tween mind, and finally getting past that point was like opening up a whole new world (literally and figuratively).

the first time i played FF6 was on my older brother's SNES with a cartridge that one of his friends had brought over. he had a save game in Kefka's Tower. i waited until they left to go hang out outside and then loaded it up and played for awhile. i don't remember if i knew at the time that it was the final dungeon, but i remember knowing that it was significant that all the party members were at such high levels. one of them had a maxed out Atma Weapon and i remember perceiving it as taking up the entire screen. that image stayed with me for a long time until years later i finally played through it and got the Atma Weapon myself, and was disappointed when it topped out to be nowhere near as long as i remember.

I remember going to fight Nidhogg in Dragon's Aery with my friend's HNMLS. I had my own high-ranking LS that I belonged to, but we didn't do the HNMs because of the considerable time constraints. We were doing skillchains and bursting with Thunder IV. It was my first time there. I accidentally cast Thundaga III instead, and caught all of the dragonflies. We were able to sleep them, and the LS leaders had people who were friendly with the competition there, so they didn't PK us and steal the claim. We recovered, killed it, and I got the wyvern beard for my help.

Getting the Black Belt remains one of my top acquisitions in that game.

I beat FF7 for my first completed jrpg ever. I had been stuck on the final battle a year earlier and then gave up. But a year later I decided to try again and I won on my first try. But the fight lasted like 30 minutes

As I was seeing the ending, my dad shouted down the stairs "go the hell to bed, you have school tomorrow"

It was like 11 pm I think

I remember being so shocked when I finally managed to beat Emerald Weapon for the first time. I'd been making attempts for at least a year up to that point, and I almost couldn't believe it when all of the sudden the big green son of a bitch started glowing red and fading away. I think I was on the phone with a friend at the time it happened, and started shouting 'holy crap, I finally beat Emerald Weapon!!'

After that, Ruby Weapon didn't seem like such an insurmountable obstacle. I'm not much of a gaming strategist, but somehow it dawned on me that one of the armlets gave an insane magic evasion stat, and that it could be used to work around Ruby's auto-Ultima every time he's hit by Knights of the Round. I slapped those armlets on every party member and was able to beat him after 2-3 tries.

nice.

as far as an overall journey, i beat CoP back in 08/09 with my closest friends in the game, who were also beating it for the first time. we static'd the whole thing and learned all the fights together. i think the expansion had a nerf before that, but it was still pretty tough to beat and having a rajas ring was still an accomplishment at the time. some of us joined some endgame together, but doing all of that as a group was so memorable.
