Because I teach them every day, and I've literally seen them save papers and assignments. Never once have I had to tell them how.

If you haven't worked with teenagers, you don't get to have a say in this.

I won't lie, I did have to explain some pretty basic stuff do a 18 years old on a computer. Sometimes they feel like reverse boomers when it comes to technology

It's not stupidity. The ones who don't know grew up on smartphones and tablets instead of Windows computers and never learned how to use them like we had to.

The interfaces on newer machines are a lot easier and simpler. Many haven't had to learn to troubleshoot or fight with the machine. If something doesn't work quickly and easily they can find themselves stumped pretty fast.

Sometimes it's just terminology like the other user said. They know what it is, they just dunno the word you're using to describe it

I know of millennials at my jobs who are not tech-literate.

Saving a Google doc in Google cloud is slightly different from saving a Microsoft word document into your home directory and locating it later

I can confirm, as a zoomer, that I am failing the preconceived notion that the youth know tech better than the ancient ones.

There is most definitely zoomers who don't know how. People here also work with zoomers, have zooner siblings, etc.

Man no one knows what a file explorer is. I hope at least younger people dont use Word to open everything.

A bunch of stereotypes have been formed based on maybe 2-3 generations. Things like "younger people are always more progressive, but they must get more conservative as they grow older" and "old people don't know technology and their children know so much more" are stereotypes that don't widely hold when circumstances change.

My theory is front end UIs and processes have advanced to a point where its so simple they havent had to experience the woes of 90s/early 2000s networking and computing.

Those days really shaped my foundation for IT work like setting up P2P servers, VPNs for torrenting, limewire, IRC, etc.

Now everything is streamlined and presented with a nice GUI and perfectly documented procedures.

Zoomers start on step 5 and have no concept of the basics. It is a growing complaint in the IT world. Certifications for certain things along with degrees, but can't troubleshoot the most basic issues.

it's less about knowledge and more about necessity. most stuff are easy enough to use that you'll never need to know those stuff.

It's like the transition from horses to cars, no one knows jackshit about taking care or riding horses anymore.

although most people don't really know how to take care of their cars too, so \_()_/. feeling superior to another generation seems to be typical human behavior, that's for sure.

Computer systems have been moving towards hiding backend logic behind "intuitive" interfaces for the past 20 years. Now learning to do normal tasks gives you no intuition about now the backend works.

iPhones and iPads arent computers in the traditional sense. You can do emails and web browsing and shit but not real computing. Same with chromebooks. Zoomers dont have to learn what a file is, how to save a file, how to locate a file the next day to continue working on it etc. all that is abstracted away.

the issue is that you cant really get real work done on those devices, so these kids are entering the workforce and have no idea how to do their jobs because all they know is Google docs and android OS

I grew up using datasetts.
If you want to know true pain, try finding a file on that!

Being a zoomer does not mean you are tech savvy. I am 44, and I have met people half my age who don't even know how to use smart phones properly.

im sure that not every zoomer is that tech illiterate. y'all make it sound like they only know how to use TikTok and Fortnite or something... lol

What I can relate to is that we have lots of apps called shit like BubblePop and AccountsZoomba and InvoiceBongo and every single one of these things requires training to understand, regardless of age or computer know-how or industry background experience.

Frustrating I'm sure, but I believe it. They probably never had a PC or Laptop and fucked around if they had a computer class. The younger generations probably play with phones and tablets more than anything.

most zoomers are way better off then we were and have associates degrees by the time they graduate high school.

I also work in IT and I still find the majority of my problem users are boomers. I do get some young people who don't understand shit, but that always presents to me as "did you take a second to actually think this through, even like 3 sedconds?" sort of problem, rather than a "this person lacks the learned skills to execute the task" problem.
