1 and 2 are really good. 3 is okay, it has moments. 4 I remember being bad and it was even worse than that. I was looking and was like Theres a fifth Pirates movie? And started watching it. I was like wow. This is bad. And got to the part with the blood moon and was like Wait this is familiar. Then I realized I actually did see this one in the theatre and I think what happened is its so bad my mind just erased the memory of it.

weirdly enough the last movie is pretty good if you forget the first three exist

and it's purely because javier and geoffrey fuckin carried that movie hard. those two are the only two actors who even seemed to want to be there

On Stranger Tides is a really good book that the lousy 4th movie is based on. Blackbeard is awesome in it and the protag definitely inspired the Jack Sparrow character.

the last two movies woulda definitely been better without depp imo

he doesn't bring anything to the table anymore, his part and purpose was over in the 3rd movie

I didn't think 4 was that bad. To me, it was a welcome change because 3 started to drag.

yeah I didnt mind 4 that much. Havent seen 5 yet. 1 is a classic, and I liked 2 and 3 well enough, but they were both definitely 30 mins too long

what I noticed last time I watched them was that the special effects still hold up really well almost 20 years later. Everything still look great. Davy Jones looks amazing

I have the DVDs of the first 3, back when they were first released, and the quality is still top notch on them. I swear 2003-2005 made the best DVDs ever. These and Lord of the Rings DVDs still holding strong

The first one is great but the rest of them are just exhaustingly tedious.

Pretty much this...although even the first one is a bit long for my taste.

I think 2 suffers from the same problem as Matrix 2. Namely, it feels better than it really is the first time you watch it, because it leaves a lot of plot threads hanging for the next movie, so you're more excited by your own anticipation and thinking about what's going to happen rather than by what you've actually seen.

But then the resolution of a lot of those plot threads isn't as good as they should be in the third movie, which sort of retroactively makes the second movie weaker.

It's the same phenomenon I tend to see happening with the Star Wars sequels, where Force Awakens felt like an okay movie until Last Jedi retroactively turned it into total shit (and proactively ruined the next movie as well).

When multiple movies are being treated as parts of a singular story, how that story ends plays a big role in whether or not the movies setting that conclusion up actually retain their value.

Was going to point this out.

But mainly because it's part of a really weird loop. On Stranger Tides (the book) was actually was one the largest influences on the original Monkey Island games. And the Monkey Island games were themselves a huge influence on the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie.

Though speaking of influences, it's fun to think about the fact that the Black Pearl may have been named after the book of the same name, which might be what inspired them to name the villain in Pirates 5 Salazar (because the main character of The Black Pearl is named Salazar, and he's been cursed). But I mostly find that interesting because The Black Pearl was written by Scott O'Dell, who also wrote The King's Fifth, which was itself the inspiration for The Mysterious Cities of Gold.

So what I'm saying is, the next Pirates movie should involve them finding El Dorado and magical artifacts from Atlantis. Because I'd be all in 100% on that.

I liked all of them. Even the last one despite trying to portray the antagonist as a bad guy despite everything revealed makes him look like a good person.

Bruh, that happened to me with the latest Tomb Raider flick. Saw it on Prime, and since I watch most video game movies, I put it on.

I had already seen it and had competely forgotten. What a forgettable flick.

I can agree with this.

4 is just so disjointed and out of place, it really didn't work in the franchise. Probably would have been better on it's own as opposed to being sandwiched in between the trilogy and 5.

5 is good and a nice way to end the whole issue of Will being stuck out at sea. The origin story for Jack is pretty nice but a little weak, especially since we already got an origin story for him, so to speak, in the trilogy that was sprinkled in at certain points.

2 is the weakest of the first three movies. Cannibal island took way too long. It was a serious drag and stopped being interesting far more quickly than the producers probably anticipated.

3 was a lot of build up but the pay off at the end was sublime.

1 was just top to bottom an excellent movie.

1 is legitimately a good film. The rest are terrible but are held up somewhat by certain amazing performances (Geoffrey Rush, Bill Nighy, Whoever played Blackbeard)
