My old PS2 still serves as a DVD player at my moms house. My XBox and Xbox1 both broke within 6 months.

all the first gen 360s are probably dead to overheating or RRoD by now whereas the OG PS3s are still going strong and are prized for being very moddable from what I remember

Definitely playstation.

Xbox will probably be completely free of the stigma from the red ring of death

360 is the worst overall.

Other than that much of a muchness. Both seem pretty reliable since PS4/Xbox One.

I'd think the failure rate of the 360 all by itself gives the win to Sony.

The original PS2s were fucking garbage. The disk read error was so bad it triggered a class action lawsuit-- every person I knew who owned a PS2 had it fail, often multiple times.

Mine didn't read blue discs at all after a while

I went through multiple PS1s because the spinner kept breaking apart. When it comes to the PS2 and the original xbox I give the edge to the PS2. My family's first PS2 had that issue where the CD lense will stop playing the blue bottom/CD games and had disc read errors. Never had a issue since with the replacement PS2.

The OG xbox has this issue where your DVD drive can die, and certain models tend to have more issues compared to the other ones. My first xbox was the thomson model, =/
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/3/9/AARkkPAADieX.jpg

OG xboxs are ticking time bombs in general. Got to replace the battery capacitor before that goes, etc.

Original 360s and PS3s are about even. 360's RROD is well known, but the original phat models of the PS3 has the just as shitty YLOD/yellow light of death. Only reason the PS3 YLOD isn't as well known is because it took a bit longer to pop up in comparison to the RROD, and its just long enough to where sony can dodge responsibility for it.

With the PS4 and xbox one my xbox one s is more reliable than my PS4 pro. My original model PS4 as far as I know did not have any issues up to when I sold it to one of my brother's friends, but my february 2017 PS4 pro started developing overheating error blue screen/issues right when september 2020 started. It only had these errors when playing red dead online, but it was only matter of time before something like that started with other games. In comparison my xbox one s always ran cool and was always quiet.

I got my PS5 day one and so far I never hear it's fan or felt it getting too hot. Always running cool and quiet so that is a good sign.

Overall the original xbox and the launch era 360s drags down the microsoft side, but pre current console generation it took sony until the original PS4s before I can truly say I finally had a playstation with no major issues the entire time I had it.

Between how terrible the original model of PS2s were (I too had the disk read error, and so did all of my friends) and the RROD with the original 360s, I'd say it's about even.

Funnily enough, I've still got a slim PS2 & a 360S hooked up & both of them are still going strong 10+ years later.

Only faulty Playstation product I ever owned in my entire life was the oooooold fatass PS3 that eventually got the YLOD, then I replaced it with the Super Slim which has been still rocking since 2014.

Even my mini PS1 still works.

Naw, it's 100% the original XBox. All old models were cheaped out when constructed and if you don't remove a specific capacitor it will eventually burst and fry your board.

Only one console line had a launch so disastrous they had to do a Tylenol-level mass recall

In my experience,

Both PS2 and Xbox were very reliable

Both PS3 and 360 weren't very reliable

Both PS4 and XOne were pretty reliable, expect my Xbox blu ray player crapped out on me recently.

XSeries X has Ben very reliable. For some reason my PS5 has not been very reliable at all. Both the system and the controller.

I assume you're too young to remember that the PS2s had a similar mass recall & were fixing the disk read error for years after launch.

My og ps4 was my first system to last a whole gen. My sister has a 360 from like 12 years ago that still works tho. And she's someone to leave it on. Not to mention it's in a cubbie with an inch of space surrounding it now and I've explained years ago that that's not good for ventilation >_>
