A woman in Norway is facing up to 3 years in prison on criminal hate-speech charges after saying that a man cannot become a lesbian. Tonje Gjevjon, a lesbian filmmaker and actress, was informed on November 17 that she was under investigation for speaking out against prominent Norwegian activist Christine Jentoft on Facebook. Jentoft is a transgender female that often refers to herself as a lesbian mother. Jentoft previously accused another woman, Christina Ellingsen, of transphobia for a similar claim. Ellingsen is also under investigation and faces three years in jail if found guilty.

The post on Gjevjons Facebook page under investigation read "Its just as impossible for men to become a lesbian as it is for men to become pregnant. Men are men regardless of their sexual fetishes." She has said that she intentionally posted her Facebook message to draw attention to Norways hate speech laws. Gjevjons comments appear to be under investigation for falling under a 2020 amendment to the countrys penal code that added "gender identity and gender expression" under protected categories from hate speech. People found guilty of hate speech face a fine or up to one year in prison for private remarks, and a maximum of three years for public comments.

Hate speech should never be tolerated. Glad she faces jail time for it.

I don't know, it kind of seems better to punish hate speech than to pretend it's harmless and allow it to become a festerous cancer in the body politic that threatens to bring down the entire system. It's probably better than allowing it to escalate into genocidal state policy and violence.

And, of course, such state censorship and state violence have always been leveled against the left and not the right in this country.

Especially when you're talking about a country where the harshest prison is probably a far sight nicer than a minimum security American prison.

Anyone on social media being arrested for anything outside of threats is pure stupidity, regardless of offensiveness. It's a waste of time, money, and resources that can go to solving actual crimes. Though, it's a play stupid games, win stupid prizes case in a lot of them because they're usually given warnings beforehand.

Criminal hate speech laws are silly in general when they reach this far, but even if they must exist, why the fuck would jail time be the consequence? Make it a fine, or something.

theres a difference between hate speech and inciteful hate speech

Inciteful hate speech should lead to jail time and America needs to be more strict on what you can and cannot say in regards to that, considering we already cannot say fire in a crowded movie theater.
