Lived here in the 80s, then moved away. Came back 5 years ago. Alaska is sort of my origin state. Technically born in Indiana but my earliest memories are in Alaska

Nah it's on the highway system, and of course you can fly in. Juneau is the one that's only accessible by plane/ferry.

In 2006 I spent May-Sept camping out. Started in Fairbanks fairgrounds for a few weeks then drove down to Soldotna and camped in Sterling the rest of the time. I fished, drank beer most of the time.

The campground in Sterling had WIFI and free electricity, I brought my PC and would even play Oblivion at night lol.

Beautiful place, except for the damn bats they call mosquitoes.

Also Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island.

I'm sure there a few more, Petersburg maybe. Lot of places in southeast are Plane/Ferry only.

Yeah, I was thinking among the upper Lynn Canal's "bigger" towns. Haines (and a few tiny towns between it and the Canadian border) and Skagway are about the only SE AK towns you can drive to/from, lol.

Probably just not viewed as much of a travel option for visitors, since it's a looong drive (that crosses into Canada) to get anywhere else in the state, like 8 hours to get back into Alaska at Tok then another 5+ to Fairbanks or Anchorage.

Yeah lived there for a year or 2 when I was a kid. My dad was in the military and got stationed there. First thing they ever told us: stay away from the moose. We lived near the woods and they were around a lot but I loved exploring those woods.

Been a while... I remember an amazing crab feast, think it was in Ketchikan. Glaciers were cool though didn't seem in great shape back then. Lots of great photo ops

I was supposed to be stationed there at that base near anchorage. I would have had to extend my contract by like a year or two tho. I decided not to extend my contract xd.

If you are bringing a pet, like a small dog, don't let it run to far from you on a leash. I've seen so many bald eagles grab tourists' pets.

The Misty Fjords helicopter tour in Ketchikan is a cool thing to book, Dolly's House is a semi-famous brothel turned museum to check out, totem park is cool if you like totem poles, uhhh.... Cape Fox Lodge has a really nice dining area that overwatches the town/ocean you take an elevator/escalator up the side of the cliff to get to it.

Juneau has a glacier tour where they land you right on top of it and let you walk around.

Couple ideas off the top of my head.

Edit: Oh and bring rain gear, SE Alaska gets more precipitation than Seattle. Like, a lot more. It will be raining when you are traveling through.

Yeah I'll put emphasis on this. Here in Juneau we average about twice as much rain as Seattle... and Ketchikan averages about twice as much as Juneau.
