Just following Sony's lead.

Expecting Gamepass to also go up like $10-$15 because even Microsoft can't keep up selling consoles and subscriptions at a loss.

At the very least, it'll be 10-15 years before Nintendo catches up.

Game pass is super profitable. It's not sold at a loss at all

That wasnt why. We went from games taking a couple years and a couple hundred grand to games taking 5+ years and costing tens of millions, hundreds for established franchises. Economically it makes no sense to maintain the 60 dollar price point anymore for modern games.

Games have been the same price for 17 YEARS (360 launch). It was bound to happen eventually. The timing just sucks.

Not to mention that games tend to see a pretty steep discount after a few months. The $70 is a premium to play earlier.

Hell, most of those games will probably be under $60 within a month.

At least they waited until the games were next gen only.

Sony and a bunch of other publishers made crossgen games way more complicated than they needed to be because of that next gen premium tax.

This would make logical sense if they also didn't have corporate tie-ins, sponsorships, microtransactions, pre-order bonuses, season passes, etc etc etc. Games don't just cost $60 anymore. They haven't for the last 10 years.

You're right, with all the microtransaction money these companies rake in they should be less, no more than $50.

It doesn't impact Microsoft much because of Game Pass but the big problem with the $70 price point is that the more niche kinds of games will have an even tougher time selling well.

Thats gonna change according to Phil Spencer.

We've held price on our console, we've held price on games, and our subscription. I don't think we'll be able to do that forever. I do think at some point we'll have to raise some prices on certain things."

Thats pretty exclusive to sports titles and yearly releases like call of duty.

extremely prevalent in freemium games but even then, the base game is free.
