Mayor Adams war on rats has hit close to home. Adams, whos made no secret of his hatred for rodents and is actively seeking a rat czar to eradicate New York Citys growing problem, has an unpaid summons since May for a rat infestation at the Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, rowhouse he owns. The summons, which carries a maximum penalty of $600, is still outstanding, according to a Daily News review of public records. The city Department of Health issued the violation in May and set an initial hearing date for June, but city records list the tickets status as rescheduled. The total amount due is currently listed at $330. Black poison rat traps, so common in New York City, are scattered around many of the homes on Adams Lafayette Ave. block. None were visible on Adams property Friday afternoon, though, but there were several garbage bags piled next to his stoop. Adams neighbor Meredith Rogers described the neighborhoods rat problem as urgent and said the filthy critters can be heard squealing all through the night. Rats are a big problem on this block, said Rogers, 31. Every given night youre dodging rats.

Despite the on-the-ground criticisms from neighbors, Adams is by far the citys most famous hater of rats. Earlier this week, he announced that the city is recruiting its first rat czar to oversee his vermin extermination push. Last month, he rolled out a new policy to reduce the time garbage bags sit on the curb. And as Brooklyn borough president, Adams dubbed himself the pied piper of vermin killing when he oversaw the rubout of 90 rats outside Borough Hall. Theres nothing I hate more than rats, Hizzoner said earlier this week after the city publicly posted the rat czar job. If you have the drive, determination, and killer instinct needed to fight the real enemy New York Citys relentless rat population then your dream job awaits. While that job posting makes clear that the ideal candidate should be determined to look at all solutions from various angles, including ... wholesale slaughter, it makes no mention of waging war in the mayors own backyard. Summons number 0802268574, which was issued to his Bedford Stuyvesant home, lists Eric Adams as the respondent and states that In an area known to be rodent infested: Active rat signs exist in that fresh rat droppings were observed near the meters and near the neighboring staircase at front right.
