Sure, but then how do movies make money? Putting new movies on streaming services brings in way less revenue then selling tickets does.

This viewpoint seems incredibly misguided, since so much more money goes into advertising for in-theater movies than needs to go into advertising streaming, and thus the idea that movies "can't" make money through streaming seems silly, especially since we have seen many do so already.

You HAVE to spend a lot more in advertising to get people to go to a theater, vs. streaming, where people can "stumble" upon your movie without having to make any sort of commitment. That, alone, makes up for a LOT of the difference in the spending that goes into a film.

EDIT: Lately, 50% or more of a film's budget goes into marketing, because you have to convince people to physically leave their home and choose to see your movie in an actual physical location. That cost drastically decreases with streaming.

And also Disney+ loses money and the service itself has to be advertised much more than a movie, which would totally hide the cost of advertising. I mean remember that Disney just blamed their heavy D+ losses on people going to theaters instead of paying $30 to stream a movie.

Yeah my concern about streaming is that it seems unsustainable as is. Undeniably streaming has brought about an enormous boost in accessibility and visibility of films as well as a huge amount of high-budget high-quality stuff. However the downside is this wont last unless either prices rise or budgets fall.

Really the other thing that has done in film is the death of the DVD market, once more profitable than tickets. I guess the hope is that PVOD will make up for it but if there is an expectation that a movie will end up on a studios own streaming service for no extra cost within a few months of release that kills that idea stone dead. Really this does highlight how much of a steal a lot of these streaming services are compared to the old ways but it likely is not sustainable.

Streaming is completely sustainable. There is value in a collection of movies people are perpetually renting.

What is unsustainable is this massive content factory producing new material. All the streaming services are just burning money producing new content to try to keep subscribers and create growth.

If Disney+ Actually did what Chapeak fudged the numbers to show which is produce content for other services such as ESPN, Disney Channel, Movies etc and then throw it in this giant vault called Disney+ that people could pay money to access it would be successful

But the Revenue would be smaller and we are in this weird profit optional world where growth matters more than anything
