. A lot of recruiters spray and pray to get more responses though and message everyone they can because one keyword showed up but the person isnt a fit at all.

Yeah, I assumed that's how it was. Always getting like $15/hour help desk positions emailed to me like..... Nah, that ain't it. Lol

Yeah the bad recruiters give the entire ""industry"" a bad look. It's the very definition of make-work.

Apparently some of the recruiters are just AI now.

Yeah a lot will create a project in LinkedIn and use a crappy Boolean and pool everyone in the project without looking at their profile and mass message everyone. I once worked with a sourcer who messaged 400 people in one day for a role we were working on and I had to report him because none of them were the kind of profiles we talked about looking for and our company was not about spamming people and making our brand look dumb. I might do 20-40 very targeted messages a week at most.

I got emails a couple months ago from an Amazon recruiter for a backend software engineer job. Like what? Probably because I have it written on my profile that I recruit backend software engineers so her Boolean picked it up.

It makes my job harder but it also helps me stand out as a recruiter because candidates like talking to me and remember me over the years. People remember the good ones. So I build a really good network over time.

Thats a nice tech stack. I used to work on that exact one when looking for backend swes at my past gig. Was hard to find people who had all of those. Any experience with microservices and APIs?

If youre serious about moving here for a better gig, I suggest practicing on leetcode. Big tech is slowing down hiring now but theyll pick back up eventually. Leetcode is practice for their coding tests.

Examples of shit shes pulled:

  1. Right before I joined she stressed I needed to hire several engineers as it was a critical business need. She had it outlined in writing as part of my one month onboarding plan. A month in, I had a really strong candidate pipeline. In our synch she then started giving me shit about being so gung ho about hiring people and that it proved I didnt have a leadership mindset because I should have been asking what the team needed. When I explained that I was following her directions she said I shouldnt get defensive and it was just constructive criticism
  2. I had a really light workload since I knew I had a strong pipeline. Another girl on the team was drowning and asked for help. I offered to take a req from her that I have a network of people already I could contact. My manager blocked it and gave me shit for some reason. Told me I should close some of mine first. I explained I already had a pipeline of interviews. Didnt matter
  3. I discussed a project Id like to work on in one of our synchs. The next team meeting she pitched my project without giving me credit. Even stole words verbatim that I had used with I pitched it to her
  4. I created a small tool to help us with offers. The team loved it. Weve all been using it with success. We decided to showcase it to my manager at our team meeting. After I presented it, she hijacked our meeting to discuss another thing entirely that she had done (as if trying to one up me). And it was something she had already shared with us multiple times. She just didnt want to acknowledge I did anything useful
  5. Our last synch I pitched another project Id like to work on to better improve how we conduct interviews. She said that was great but wanted me to run everything by her. Shes a complete control freak. I was brought on as the most senior person on the team to help them with this stuff. Why bring me on if you dont trust me?
  6. She has talked shit about everyone at the company and told me she never worked anywhere that had such low quality engineers. That everyone was toxic, entitled, etc I was only part of the company 2 weeks when she went on this rant about everyone. She is an executive at the company. Why are you there if you hate everyone so much? Plus who talks to a new employee that way? I dont know if she was trying to freak me out or what

I might write more if I recall more. Just want to write these down somewhere to keep them fresh in my mind for my exit conversations.

I would. Like you said, think he deserves to know. If I remember right you said it's a startup, it could potentially be a massive problem for their company if a toxic person like that keeps running away good employees.

Sounds like she has a entitled attitude & is Bi-Polar.

She should be FIRED ASAP.

Please recommend to the Co-Founder that she be fired.

She's clearly bad for any company and shouldn't be in any kind of position of authority.

She might also need "Medical Help" first.

Yes its a startup and shes VP of people. But she hates everyone. Some VP. She even bad mouthed the other co-founder. Ill keep that to myself though. My guess is there is already friction there they know about.

Yeah I dont think shes stable honestly. She doesnt remember any conversations. Even if you take notes and share them with her, she wont read them. She repeats herself every meeting and acts like its new info she hasnt shared. Over and over. Its very odd.

Thought of something else.

7- She kept suggesting I should take on non-tech roles as part of my growth. Kept talking about it giving me visibility to other departments which would help once Im manager. One day I asked her if I could take those on and she started giving me crap that I was still thinking like a recruiter who wanted more work and not like a leader and other crap. It was so confusing. Then she said she gave them to another team member (the one I mentioned was drowning). Well the other recruiter told her she had too much on her plate so a week later my boss messaged me asking if Id like one of these roles and if not she can share them with an external agency. As if we never had the conversation before.

So she also has a "Short Term Memory" issue.

Then she definitely shouldn't be working if she can't remember basics like your last conversation.

If anything, I think she should be hospitalized and assessed by doctors & psychiatrists.

no one cares how many hours you put in as long as the job gets done.
This is the main selling point. My current job has this atmosphere and it's so freeing. It allows you to run errands without worry. You don't feel like you're chained to your desk. If I have an appointment one morning and can't start work until 11am, my boss doesn't care. If I don't have any meetings in the afternoon and decide to take a two hour lunch break, no one blinks an eye.

Does a sourcer get compensation like recruiters?

Thats huge for me as well. I had a boss like that before and she knew to just give me space and Id deliver. Meanwhile people on my team are constantly slacking everything theyre doing, like taking a late lunch or running an errand, like theyre terrified of our boss. Were salaried employees. You can take lunch whenever you want. No need to have to tell the whole team you are taking lunch at 1 PM instead of 12. But thats the kind of thing shes been running. Along with also needing to write her a summary of everything we worked on every other Friday. Ive never had to do that at another company in my role, ever.

Sourcers actually tend to make a little less. So if I got the recruiter job I would have been compensated more. So thats a bummer but at the same time its at least a bit of a bump and Ill be doing like 15-20% less of the work. Im in a place where I need this right now. So its perfect.

Exactly. So many places treat their salary employees like they're hourly. My team structures our work based on Agile two week sprints so outside of the short daily standups, I'm left alone for that time to get my work done.

That doesn't sounds like a big deal to me. It's still a pay bump and with that much of a reduction in workload, it's a no brainer. This new job is more about work life balance than salary imo. Time to work a chill job where you can coast for a while while focusing on the family.

Yeah Im excited to finally take a breather. Recruiting during the pandemic tech wars was especially insane. Most of us are burnt out. And I was doing it with a newborn.

Im seriously so grateful I got this job in a world where many of us have been laid off or are facing layoffs. There are hardly any good recruiter jobs out there. And those gets hundreds if not thousands of applicants. I feel so beyond lucky.

I said Id transition things to other team members and my last day would be December 16th but she wants me to hand everything off this Wednesday which signals that I wont last much longer beyond that. She hasnt really said much other than she hopes the new place will provide me with more growth opportunity than they can give me. So it was like an acknowledgement of some kind.

Not everything but I did say that she walked back a lot of things she promised me or acted like the conversations didnt happen. He admitted he had been hoping she would learn to offload things from her plate to someone like me with a lot of experience who could support her and he was sad she wasnt able to do it. It sounded like he knew she had a hard time letting go. He didnt seem surprised by anything I shared.

I still think you should've revealed everything about her.

She sounds incredibly toxic and not fit for any work place given her "Short Term" memory & Bi-Polar behavior.

Hmm I knew about a month in after my manager went nuts on me for doing something she asked me to do. And then started interviewing a couple of weeks after that. I just hit my 2 month mark last week. I was lucky because I had a friend reach out with another job so I had connections I was able to leverage. I could have waited and tried to make it work but with recruiter jobs being so hard to find now I just didnt want to risk it.

Unfortunately not, I didn't realise the importance of networking until it was too late. Even now, I'm not really sure how to go about it

The main thing holding me back is how it took me almost 9 months to find this job. I'd rather not go through that again. Right now the plan is to stay here for a few years so I can show the skills gained during the job and then apply around. But, a few years...

So I talked to my acquaintance at the company. I was his recruiter in the past and he actually talked me into joining. He asked me what happened and I shared everything.

Well, he wasnt at all surprised. Said shes been problematic in other instances. Recruiting has very high turnover and she doesnt work well with others and is an insecure leader in general. He also mentioned that she is struggling with health issues that are affecting her memory (he didnt specify physical or mental and I didnt ask) that is making things more difficult for the co-founders to manage. So theyre all aware. But he was glad I was removing myself from the situation but really bummed it came to that.

Start making friends at your company, try to form a bond with your manager and skip level if possible. Networking is about building relationships with others, keeping in touch. You dont have to be best buddies but just cordial. Then do good work and they will refer you. Someone might move on to another company and try to refer you. Thats how I got 2 of my last 3 jobs. I knew people I worked with before who I had good relationships with that referred me.

They should've fired her, made you a generous offer to take her spot.

Guys. I found out she was planning on promoting a different recruiter with far less experience than me to the manager role. Thats why all the things she promised me were being walked back. She gave everything to the other recruiter. Shes being promoted now. A recruiter I was mentoring because shes junior. But she favors her so it doesnt matter.

I did find out a lot of people cant stand the VP though and another manager in a leadership meeting called her a tyrant and called her Napoleon. It sounds like shes been a huge issue but for some reason theyre struggling with doing the right thing.

I feel bummed because I left a good gig on the promise of being developed and Im now taking a huge career pause instead. Im trying to tell myself this was all for the best.

That's a "run out of the building, jump, turn in midair, and double deuce the building as you leave" kinda exit worthy.

Yeah it validated everything I was feeling. I had told my husband 2 weeks in that she was going to promote the other girl and I could tell. I dont think she ever really wanted to hire me. I blew the other interviewers away and the cofounders loved me. So she wanted to move goal posts and try and diminish me by treating me unfairly.

I honestly feel so stupid and low. This keeps happening to me. So something must be wrong with me. Either way Im done trying. Im just going to do my job and thats it. Eventually Ill be my own boss. Regardless of the lack of promotions I know for a fact that Im good at my job.
