could that 2d surface be a projection of a 1d line? asking for a friend.

It's all an extrapolation of a single point.

i wasnt even gonna go there but goddamn, yea, maybe.

i dont think so tho, we need at least one dimension, just like we need at least 2 states (0 and 1) to convey information at all. but we dont need any more than that.

The Holographic Principle originally came out of String Theory. A string is a line so there's that. But honestly, I don't know.

i feel like, instinctively, it's gotta be a 1-dimensional structure at its core (the bedrock foundation of reality). underneath string theory, the fundamental structure should be just 1 and 0. anything can be encoded in it, and there is nothing simpler. even "base 1" isn't really base-1 its just a different way of representing base-2 (base-1 would be like hash marks counting the days on a prison wall, a line for every 1. but you need spaces between those lines to encode more than 1 thing.

IIRC String Theory originally came about because someone looked at the equation for the Standard Model and noticed it resembled the equation for describing the geometry of a ring. This was what prompted them to swap out 0-dimensional point particles for 1-dimensional rings or "strings". They also swapped out 1-dimensional world lines for 2-dimensional "world sheets".

that's fascinating.

i've felt (for several years) that we talk about dimensions entirely wrong by ignore the complex axis most of the time. and a complex line looks like a 2-dimensional plane.

thus the question: fundamental reality: encoded in 1 or 2 dimensions?

ultimately even something like a string could have multiple dimensions on its surface (i.e. if you could zoom in on a string it would be like a garden hose and if you just kept zooming in you could build a tiny 3-dimensional city on the surface of a "1-d" string.

even the surface of the earth is clearly a sphere (a 2d surface) when viewed from space, but look around from the surface of the earth and things look hella 3d.
