I can agree it's a little out of character but that's not a bad thing. It fits and has potential.

To be fair, being the first movie it should be about the Mario Brothers saving the kingdom. That was the whole story, Bowser was conquering and these outsiders showed up and helped beat him. Him kidnapping the rightful ruler is part of his whole plan to insert himself.

Now, when they do a sequel, absolutely have Peach deciding to take matters into her own hands. But for the first movie, it should follow the story.

Which is what Toad should be helping him out with.

Who says he has to kick ass the whole time? He can fight Bowser more than once, and lose.
