They are going to do a series of 48 hour strikes.

https://www.newstatesman.com/spotlight/transport/2022/11/mick-lynch-interview-rmt-union-train-strikes

Union claims government reimburses the rail services for their loses during strikes. (I did not know this.)

They literally want to be able to take unpaid leave when they are sick.

Don't be a corporate bootlicker over this, because there's absolutely no excuse why at a minimum they can't take unpaid leave.

So I found a reference for cannot take unpaid leave even. The railroad counts hours in a way which disqualifies most workers from being covered by FMLA

"Some sick leave protections under the Family and Medical Leave Act guarantee unpaid job-protected leave for up to 12 weeks when an employee is sick, caring for a newborn or newly adopted child, or caring for an immediate family member with a serious health condition.
But the FMLA only applies when an employee has worked at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months. Rail carriers dont count time toward FMLA eligibility when a rail worker is on call, leaving many rail employees out, said Jared Cassity, Alternate National Legislative Director for SMARTs Transportation Division. The lack of protections made the sick leave issue a particular sticking point in the contract negotiations that came to a head last month.
These guys are forgoing their doctors appointments or when theyre sick just to make sure that they have points in case an actual emergency arises, Cassity said, And theyre being forced to work more and more.

Bullshit technicalities like this are why someone needs to put their foot down, stop the economy and force the government and businesses to treat people like humans.

This absolutely could be a bad move for Biden's reelection chances. Folding on such a simple request as a few sick days paints him in a bad light no matter which angle you look at it.

Sad part is though, if the rail workers strike and tank the economy, voters are dumb enough to see nothing but "economy bad" and still vote against Biden. Damned if you do, damned if you don't

Yeah, I'm not surprised Biden would go that way. As President, a blow to the economy reflects bad on him, regardless of the context. Especially with some sectors still recovering from Covid, he was pretty much in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. I don't agree with it, but a lot people don't consider how brutal politics can truly be.

I mean you can be condescending all you want but I am right about a large-scale rail strike killing the entire economy in a matter of days

obviously the greedy corps make enough profit to give people sick days, which is why congress is intervening with that part of the problem as well

They arent intervening on the sick days though. They are playing politics.

by making it a bill (that they know will pass) and an amendment (that they know will die) they are trying to wash their hands of it and say they made an effort to give the workers their sick days but republicans blocked it

they should have passed one bill with the sick days. Not an empty gesture of an amendment that has a 100% chance of failing in the senate

  1. let the strike happen. let the economy hurt. show the rich they have to give concessions. let the lose sleep. let workers know they do have power
  2. just make the rich fat idiot capitalists give them some sick days
