They literally want to be able to take unpaid leave when they are sick.

Don't be a corporate bootlicker over this, because there's absolutely no excuse why at a minimum they can't take unpaid leave.

So I found a reference for cannot take unpaid leave even. The railroad counts hours in a way which disqualifies most workers from being covered by FMLA

"Some sick leave protections under the Family and Medical Leave Act guarantee unpaid job-protected leave for up to 12 weeks when an employee is sick, caring for a newborn or newly adopted child, or caring for an immediate family member with a serious health condition.
But the FMLA only applies when an employee has worked at least 1,250 hours over the past 12 months. Rail carriers dont count time toward FMLA eligibility when a rail worker is on call, leaving many rail employees out, said Jared Cassity, Alternate National Legislative Director for SMARTs Transportation Division. The lack of protections made the sick leave issue a particular sticking point in the contract negotiations that came to a head last month.
These guys are forgoing their doctors appointments or when theyre sick just to make sure that they have points in case an actual emergency arises, Cassity said, And theyre being forced to work more and more.

Yeah, I'm not surprised Biden would go that way. As President, a blow to the economy reflects bad on him, regardless of the context. Especially with some sectors still recovering from Covid, he was pretty much in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. I don't agree with it, but a lot people don't consider how brutal politics can truly be.

They arent intervening on the sick days though. They are playing politics.

by making it a bill (that they know will pass) and an amendment (that they know will die) they are trying to wash their hands of it and say they made an effort to give the workers their sick days but republicans blocked it
