I havent been moved by a movie that much in a long time. I was surprised it was even playing in my area. Gonna be one of those movies that I wish I could watch for the first time again.

Would you consider it the definitive version, Tc?

I'd say so, I haven't seen OG Disney movie in a few years though. Maybe when GDT's movie comes to Netflix, I'll watch both and see how they compare.

That's great to hear. The guy is a master class monster designer so I was hoping that something fantasy like Pinocchio would be right up his alley. I don't know if he'll ever produce something better than Pan's Labyrinth, but the more work that man gets the better.

There are some absolutely stellar sets too. Just one memorable set after another really.

I am so looking forward to it. I hope I can add this to Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape of Water as another masterpiece.

I also just read that he made sure the animators got equal billing to the voice actors and the puppet designer is going with him on his press tour. He's putting a lot of emphasis into giving the artists behind the scenes more credit and exposure and that's awesome.

The real test would be against the 1971 animated Pinocchio adaptation by Giuliano Cenci called "Un burattino di nome Pinocchio". I've heard that Italy considers that movie their definitive version.

I just saw it here in Braga and the theater was completely empty. I was the only person in it.

As for the movie itself (some mild spoilers ahead)...

The visuals were amazing, that's for sure. Del Toro really has the touch for making fantasy and fantastical creatures come to life. As for the story, it's definitely not the Disney Pinocchio, old or new version.

It's set during WWI and WWII, with the bulk of the movie set in Mussolini-controlled Italy. So while you see him run away to the circus... be also prepared to see the Fascist Italy's secret police force him into a youth army training camp in the hopes he'll fight for them against the Allies in WWII (since he's a wooden puppet who can't be killed).

The one thing I found annoying was one of the songs in the movie. At one point, Pinocchio sings... and it was really, REALLY annoying to me. I just wanted to mute the movie at that point until he finished.

But the overall theme of the movie, that of cherishing those you love whenever you can (because you never know what will happen tomorrow; will they still be with us?), was particularly poignant to me.

And the end perfectly fit the theme.
