i'm not sure what point you are trying to make here. poor people don't generally have the means or desire or practical necessity to go to financial advisors, and poor people are the ones buying lottery tickets the most, so yeah, they're not likely to go to financial advisors any more than they were before and likely to be irresponsible with the money, thus losing it.

the point is they're not rich, and playing the lottery is statistically not likely to make one rich, even if you do win it (which the chances of doing are overwhelmingly low in the first place)

right, i understand that. but saying what they "ought" to do is pretty much irrelevant when we're talking about the statistics of what they are doing.

I gave out tickets for Christmas one year. Gave my sister a fake one for 10 grand. She was pissed. Great prank, though. She's pretty greedy as it is, and she took it hook, line and sinker. She did forgive me, but man she was pissed. Her husband thought it was hilarious.

This is somewhat false.
You first mistake is thinking that gambling is about money...it's not.
Also, there are plenty of Financial Advisors who gamble plenty.

It's about the addiction. Not the money, and that addiction can hit anyone of any walk of life if they have a predisposition to it.

Well then how can it be a "tax on poor" people if it's an addiction that people are predisposed to?

Addiction doesn't know how much money you have before hitting you.

Maybe people think it's a tax on poor people simply because there's more poor people out there?

When I got out of high school, I had a full time landscaping job.

It was the norm for most of my coworkers to go take their paycheck up to a gas station, cash it there and get dinged a percentage, but then they would drop 50% of their check on fucking scratch offs

and then end up skipping meals through the week

Well I used to agree with the sentiment.
But after working in a Casino for almost a decade I finally learned that it wasn't about how much money you win, it's about the adrenaline of winning.

I really am not a gambler at all...or the poor tax thing made sense, but once I was around it for so long began to see it for what it really is.
((As for money, the works thing that can happen is someone new to it wins big, and thus the ball gets rolling))

That's what I'm saying. It's not about being "rich or poor", it's about the adrenaline rush that comes with winning, even if it's only a dollar.

That dopamine rush that creates the addiction doesn't care if you're rich or poor, or if you gambled $1 or $1000 dollars.

Ya, it took me the longest time to understand that.
The addiction is only made worse because it is socially acceptable.

I drink too much, so I get it...But I thank God every day that I don't have the gambling gene.

I hate when there's only one checker working at the gas station, because they spend several minutes processing the dozen lottery tickets of each person ahead of me.

All I want is a soda, can't I just skip ahead while y'all waste money on lottery tickets?
