TPM is one of the few instances where I'll freely admit that childhood nostalgia is the one and only thing propping it up, and in this case just barely; some of that stuff looked really cool in 1999, and I have fond memories of it looking really cool in 1999.

I remember '99 fondly, with the Matrix and Phantom Menace. In retrospect the latter wasn't great, but you can't take away the good feels before the downward spiral. In general really. Something about that time just made it less painful. It wasn't better in the light of when it was made, it was tolerable because so much else wasn't complete and utter shit yet.

THey should have stuck with their guns after TLJ instead of listening to a minority of whiny neckbeards on the internet.

TPM >? TLJ >>>> RoS > AotC
Phantom Menace is a functional movie. There's a plot, there's 3 acts, the music and action is cool at times, and the actors are playing their characters. Take out Jar Jar and it's pretty good, wish Dark Maul was a more active player.

Attack of the Clones is not a functional movie. The plot is a mess, the characters are not people, the actors are deliberately not trying. Unironically, the best part of AotC is Jar Jar. This is not a movie that should have made it to the light of day. "I hate sand." I cannot believe anyone who rewatches this as an adult can see it better than any other SW movie.

Similarly, RoS can be considered a nonfunctional movie. I think it tries harder than AotC, though, and at least the actors don't pull you out of the experience, though the CGI can. This is not "the best they could have done," not even close.

I kind of want to dig up AotC now, since my memory of it is next to non-existent outside of the "I hate sand" meme and sand people massacre.

Its so bad that I have yet to care enough to bother watching it. Ive seen every other Star Wars film prior, but just cant find the urge or care to watch it. Maybe someday, maybe not.
