I've never understood this and it was always a bit strange to see people just clapping at a screen, lol. I mean, I can understand it if it was at a film festival where the crew and or actors/director is there in person. But yeah...I always found it funny to see because the only people clapping at is the other people clapping at the other people, etc. There was something that reassured me of this, where one random dude said out loud right next to me after watching Wakanda Forever. "They can't hear you!" And im like yup...this guy gets it, lol.

It's a social convention. While a holdover from live performances/presentations, it's more a matter of participation in crowd enthusiasm in the situation you're citing.

Like... I remember when people were going to the Star Wars prequels... people would like... act out scenes from the first 3 movies while waiting for the show to start and stuff. Going to a theater of any kind is more of a social event than watching something at home.

Well, I guess you can say that people get the clap very easily these days.

I went to a film festival once where the actors who were in the movie were actually in the theater watching the movie with us. I felt like it was appropriate to clap after that one, but otherwise, nah.

it's dumb, but I can ignore it.

what I hate is when idiots cheer and make noise during the movie for lines/moments/character arrivals.... often causing the next lines to be missed.

can't remember which movie it was, but luckily people shut up after I shouted at them to do so for making noise.

I dont understand why you singled out that character who hasnt been in a movie since 1983 and probably wasnt getting clapped for back then.

This is why I don't go to the movies anymore. If there's anything that I want to watch , I'll buy it on DVD

This reminds me of the time when Cap caught Thors hammer in this one audience reaction video and what I can only describe it as freaking neanderthals or apes making primitive noises.
