One example of this would be Mario Bros Super Show- how there were live action elements of the same characters that were portrayed in cartoon. I see this as a really cheesy example and something that may have worked for us as kid as that time, but did not age well.

Are there any examples of stories that utilize both cartoon and live action for the same story/characters and do it in a really convincing/compelling way?

Who Framed Roger Rabbit is probably the most famous one of this, but there are quite a few that fit depending on how you want to view the topic. Almost every movie has had insane amounts of "mixed cartoon/live action" but there is a bit of a difference between Space Jam and The Matrix despite both having a lot of both.

I was thinking more along the lines of the same characters having live action and cartoon versions of themselves represented. So like maybe some kind of transition, where sometimes the story is being told in cartoon and sometimes it's told via live action.

Like the American version of Sailor Moon that just recently showed up on the internet (which was pretty horrible)

I see.

I want to say that something comes to mind but I just can't remember what it was. Tron keeps coming to me but that isn't what you are talking about at all.

I think TC is thinking more along the lines of like Lizzie Maguire which is a comedy with dream sequences every episode and throughout the episode tucked and edited into the corners and scene changes featuring the main character (Lizzie) as a cartoon. Probably not exactly what you were going for (old Disney Channel kiddie dramedy), but on a very technical level, this is it, and its not CGI. And it was successful during its run.

The Pagemaster
this is a great example, but the live action is really only at the beginning and end to set up the cartoon, like a Wizard of Oz thing, is the only question that comes to mind

Blues Clues also comes to mind as a super successful cartoon + live action thing, also obviously not for this demographic, but maybe someones kids or little siblings

End of Evangelion comes to mind

James and the Giant Peach, but I believe that's also live action only at start and end. Osmosis Jones does a lot more cutting between live action and cartoon, but the characters are different between the two sections.

The fuck are you smoking, the live action segments are great. Helps that they're functionally just host segments in cosplay.

Community kinda fits. It has entire episodes where the characters are cartoons or claymation characters. I think it was done really well.

This one is even more of a stretch but Shining Time Station. The live action parts were in a train station with real trains and people and then it switched to cartoon form with Thomas the Tank Engine and friends.
