Back in the day, the father figure was greatly respected. Corporations began to find that the greatest consumers of products featured in ads were women and children. But that the men would act as gatekeepers at times. No, honey, we dont need a Chia Pet.

And so began the plot to undermine those men, and increase profits. Hence how we get to todays culture.

Learning about the psychological tactics used by corporations feels like escaping the matrix.

That's basic level crap. Every industry has shitty and horrible tactics to get sales. And the cherry on top is how all those industries lobby politicians to keep it all legal.

I mean the world we live in is pretty shitty.

It can be surprising how much of what we think is our culture and "normal", was decided by propagandistic advertising over half a century ago.

Like the entire concept of "breakfast", and the idea of bacon as a breakfast food.

Which was straight up created by a single marketing guy to sell more bacon.

Breakfast goes back ages, unless you mean cornflakes/cereal in particular?

Edit: Yes, phrasing it like that is a cultural thing, cornflakes is the generic word in Dutch, even for non-cornbased varieties.

The idea of eating a meal in the morning to "break your fast", yes.

But the idea of specific breakfast foods wasn't really a thing before the 20th century. What you ate for breakfast was generally the same thing you ate for lunch, or dinner. Food was food, and people didn't categorize things as "this is a breakfast food", "this is only a dinner food", etc.

It's why I mentioned bacon. Bacon was mostly just a food people ate whenever. It was a food that existed for thousands of years. But the idea of it as a foundational "breakfast" food can literally be traced back to the 20th century, because we know the name of the guy who created the ad campaign that led to it.

Corn Flakes weren't originally intended to be a breakfast food either.

The entire premise of "cereal" as "breakfast food" is a 20th century concept as well. And again, it was mainly a marketing strategy to encourage people to buy more cereal.
