the person that appeared at the other end was only a copy with all your memories. I can't recalled what it was, but I remember it being from something.

Star Trek. There's a reason Bones never wanted to use the transporter.

Can you provide the source to that? I could only watch like three episodes of the OS.

The Prestige

Yes and no.

In the Prestige, the killing is separate, not done by the teleporter.

Edit: and in regards to Star Trek, it is never confirmed either way. It was a fan theory that was eventually incorporated into the show fuelling some characters' uncertainty over the technology.

Then the answer is probably most other teleportation things. Lots of media that cover teleportation use that theory Well, the ones that use science over magic

It's usually not an explicit part of any given story, but it's something that lots of people have pointed out about teleporters in general.

Unless it's direct physical transportation (like Stargate), a teleporter would have to work by disassembling you at the point of departure and building a new you from completely different molecules at the point of arrival (like Star Trek). So unless you believe in the concept of a soul and that it transmigrates from one body to another, teleportation would essentially be murdering you every time you use it, and simply creating a copy of you somewhere else.

It gets into a lot of Ship of Theseus style discussion about what actually makes a person that person,

Star Trek has touched on this very rarely (mainly in the TNG episode where Riker gets duplicated, because the transporter glitches and doesn't delete the original), and like people pointed out The Prestige plays with the idea (with him having to physically murder the original). But it's more of a thought experiment than something people tell stories about.

Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom did something like this. But instead of it being transporters, everyone has a brain implant that backs up their memories and personality. If you die, a clone body is grown and your "backup" is restored into it, creating a new "you" that thinks it's the original.

I was thinking of the movie "John Carter" where he teleported to Mars (Marsoom) but his body was on Earth the whole time. Great movie btw which Disney messed up with a lousy marketing campaign.

It's in Star Trek the Motion Picture, the first movie with Kirk and crew.
