Oh I finally beat this game two days ago. 100%, Platinum trophy, got every single medal you can get in the game.

This game has its issues, but it's definitely at its best with Sonic just running around, beating giant enemies, and cyberspace stuff. I felt immense frustration when they threw me into bullshit like pinball where I watch the ball bounce for 2 minutes in the upper corner and then land in the gutter, or the final boss which I have to touhou my way to victory and found it tremendously not fun. That shit sucked.

I loved my time for the most part though, and I loved how creative and fun they got with a lot of it. If they want to make this the platform for the rest of their games, then they definitely have something here. They need more people working on these games though, and enough time to polish, because there's still some wildly annoying things in it.

But I simply loved running around with Sonic in these worlds and having cool fights. Give me more of that and less touhou and I'll be happy.

Picked this up on Black Friday for only 30 bucks and been...kinda loving it! On the final island and probably gonna beat it tonight. Really might be the best non-2D game in the series, though I'm not quite sure I can put it over Generations. Yeah, I don't think I can. Maybe even higher highs than Generations, but it's not as consistent.

Biggest gripe is I absolutely hate the bosses. They should be great, but they end up just being confusing, frustrating, and not at all fun to play. They don't explain the mechanics well at all, parrying is incredibly frustrating (though it's gotten so much easier knowing you can just hold the buttons down and the timing is all on the release of them), and starting a 7 minute fight over (with rings reset and potential forced grinding) is kind of hot garbage when they don't feel like very skill-based fights. That happened to me when I missed a freaking quick time button press. At least the boss music kinda rules.

There are definitely a few other small gripes here and there, but in general I've been impressed with all the different ideas and obstacles in what is a pretty repetitive formula. It should have gotten stale, but 16 hours in I'm having as much fun as ever. Really dig this game and it's just great to have a good 3D Sonic again.

Near 4-1 on the last island, there are these dinosaur looking enemies that form a big red circle and jump out at you until eventually the red circle closes in on you and kills you. Anyone know how the heck to deal with those guys? No attacks seem to damage them as they jump out. There's also no combat icon on the map though by them? So that's odd.

E: Never mind, figured it out literally seconds after posting. You gotta parry them. I tried that a bunch already but guess I never got the timing right.

Oh dear lord you appear to be right. This will at least make the bosses much more enjoyable, even though I'm at the end of the game now. But this makes regular enemies kind of trivial.

I get the feeling the parry system used to be harder, but probably was frustrating in return and what we got in the end was a compromise.

Yeah, 100% the map and you'll get all the icons, plus you can fast travel between the cyberspace portals too.

Holy shit the fishing spot on the final island just gives you so many damn tokens per fish. Think I can basically max out every single one of my stats now

And uhhhh, fuck this Elder Koco only allowing you to upgrade a single stat at a time. Most baffling design decision of all time. Been here 20 minutes increasing speed and ring capacity. Can't even spam the A button since the first option is "no thanks."

sonic please stop trying to tell serious stories you're not good at it

Real final boss makes the grave mistake of gameplay that has nothing to do with the rest of the game - or the vast majority of the rest of the game, in this case. At least those shooting segments are pretty fun, but what another dumb design decision. That should have been some weird secret boss, not the final one.

Still a great game though. Look forward to the free DLC whenever it arrives.

I have a suspicion that the final boss originally involved running around on the surface of the boss itself and destroying nodes or something and it didn't work or was, again, not very fun and what we got was, again, the compromise.

Honestly, Frontiers feels like there were lots of compromises in several areas in order to make it less of a slog and it's better for it, even if some mechanics feel pointless because of it.
